DVD Day

Heavy day today. Lots of season sets people might be interested in -- Smallville, Family Guy, Married With Children, Upright Cittizens Brigade, Stargate Atlantis, Boston Legal, several more; a number of anniversary editions, from Deliverance to Wall Street; the complete series of Josie and the Pussycats; yet more versions of Troy. But my own radar has a couple of particular hits:
  • Jekyll, an acclaimed over-the-top British miniseries from the current producer of Doctor Who
  • The Johnny Cash Show: The Best of Johnny Cash, 1969-1971
  • a two-disk special edition of Death Proof, one-half of Grindhouse
  • Superman: Doomsday, the animated movie of the Death Of Superman sequence
  • a Criterion Collection of a hunk of my childhood, Robinson Crusoe On Mars
Any DVD you need us to know about?

Oooo.... Jekyll looked so good when they were running it on BBC America but I wasn't around to catch it half the time so I never started watching it. The commercials gave me total creeps though. **shivver**

And I'll have to put Josie on my wish list, Scooby-Doo was my favourite but she and Jabber Jaw were running right behind.

Jekyll was *great*. It got a bit rocky towards the end, and things might not have come together quite as well as I hoped, but overall, it was really good.

I'm waiting for Family Guy v5 and the pilot for the short lived Blade series.

I watched the whole six-part Jekyll on BBC. Enjoyed it thoroughly except for the very end which was a bit stupid. Up until that final five minutes?...awesome.

Hmm. The site I follow to keep me up to date on DVD releases didn't even mention this Jeckyll. I'll have to at least check it out. Other than that this month is pretty bare for me. I keep telling myself I should give the Stargate TV shows a chance. I never started watching them because I was thoroughly underwhelmed by the movie.

I'm cutting back on some minor purchases like that anyway as I'm trying to accelerate the debt reduction. With a bit of discipline we should be able to hit our goal of debt-free except for the mortgage in the next few months. I'd like to hit that goal by 40, and I turn 39 at the end of this month. *sigh*

Ah, Superman: Doomsday, our introduction to Adam Baldwin as the Man of Steel.

"He's the hero of Metrop'lis, the man they call... Kal."

plus James Marsters as Lex Luthor. Someone phone Joss Whedon and tell him we found his missing supporting actors! [snerkle]

Amazon sent the "shipped" notice on Sunday night so I can start hoping for it today.

DC picked up about half of them, I think. Gina Torres as Vixen, Nathan Fillion as Vigilante, Amy Acker as Huntress, Morena Baccarin as Black Canary, Adam Baldwin doing a number of voices to now include Big Blue, and friggin' Spike doing first Braniac in Smallville and now Lex Luthor himself. Ron Glass even did one episode as a news anchor back on Superman: TAS.

I couldn't help but notice that. I think they put Vixen and Vigilante in that Hawkgirl episode together on purpose. Someone inside WB animation was a Browncoat, don't you just know it?

I thought it was okay. Although, the character design was very, very different from the tradition DC Animated Universe ones. Supes looks pretty much okay, but Lois looks like a teenager with droopy hair and too short a skirt, and Lex Luthor looks like he's been on a starvation diet.

To prevent a spoiler notice, I won't mention the essential plot change from the animated series that occurs in this show.

However, I WILL mention that the DVD extras, with creators from DC Comics talking about the "Death of Superman" issues, contradicts some stuff said in the book "The Comic Book Heroes." I kind of trust that book more than anything said in official comic book PR stuff like the DVD extras. It said that the reason for the "Death of Superman" was just an attempt to create a big event for issue #75, new numbering, of the comic. What the ladies and gents of DC said on the disk...involves plot struggles between the Lois and Clark TV show and the comic, and guess who lost?

Jeff Dunham's "Spark of Insanity" also hits shelves today. If you're not familiar with Jeff, he's an extremely talented and funny ventriloquist, whose puppets include Peanut the Purple Woozle and Walter the Curmudgeon.

(Ah yes, I can hear the chorus of "Oh, it's that guy!!" now! :-) )

And best yet, there's a minuscule chance that I'm actually on the DVD! My girlfriend and I went to DC for the recording of that show, and they were taking a metric a$$load of audience shots. When I get a chance to watch it, I'll let you guys know if we're on there.

I'm running out to buy the new Dropkick Murphys CD today. Everything else can wait until my credit cards are paid off.

You'll have to let me know about "Doomsday."

SPOILER ALERT

From: [identity profile] filkertom.livejournal.com
Drastic departures from the backstory of the comic... but overall it's working. And I'll tell you this: thirteen minutes in, not only is Doomsday killing people right and left... not only are Superman and Lois nekkid in the Fortress of Solitude... but a character has actually said the phrase, "Insert a diode catheter into Satan's rectum".

Really.

Don't forget A Dog's Breakfast, David Hewlett's indie film. I saw this in it's premiere screening in Los Angeles and nearly died laughing. It's definitely worth owning.
