Last year, we assembled a really great list of Irish and Celtic music:Of course, the best one of all was this:

I've added a few more pages, and the original post (the very first link up there) has even more links to individual songs. Got any more?

I know at some point, [livejournal.com profile] tmoh and I were discussing the brocesty implications in the final verse of this version of "Whiskey in the Jar"...

I'd suggest a listen to Wicked Tinkers, who are Scottish, but also play Irish music and weird stuff that includes adding a didge to Celtic music.

That's Tom Jones. And believe it or not, he wasn't trying to be funny.

Try or not, he succeeded in being funny. I just have one question: Why does everyone supposedly get all weepy when someone sings "Danny Boy"? Any time I have heard it, my reaction has been more "So what?" than anything else. I think the only way you could get me to cry over someone sing "Danny Boy" would be if they were singing in the key of Off.

"And dooooown the mountainside..." I admit to enjoying Tom Jones's music as a guilty pleasure, but that was ghastly. Thanks for sharing!

I stand by all my picks from last year, though I've been getting deeper and deeper into Black 47's (http://www.black47.com/) stuff (the most awesome "Danny Boy" ever!).

I would add The Tartan Terrors (http://www.tartanterrors.com/) to the list...saw them at the Dublin Irish Fest and they totally slayed me!

And the 'supergroup' Altan (http://www.altan.ie/) just released a 25th Anniversary album (http://www.altan.ie/altan-25-years.html) that I'm partial to because, um, er, I was there. I happened to be in Dublin with friends and we went to the show...in the front row. It's pretty old-school trad. Celtic, but watching Brendan Gleeson on fiddle was a HOOT!

IONA (not to be confused with the Christian band Iona from Britain) plays music from all the Celtic lands.

I've been listening to recordings of Marty Burke from long-ago Sunday nights at Chaim Sweeney's. Real Irish music. As he was wont to say, "If Bing Crosby sang it, I don't."

Anything by Bob Reeder. Fact is, if you come to Kansas City, I HIGHLY recommend attending his live show. When I get home tonight, I'll post a couple of his videos that I know are on Youtube.

I like Scantily Plaid. I think of it as Gaelic music rather than strictly Scottish though YMMV. :-) This link is to their sound bytes.

Because I thrive on being contrary, this is the song that always comes to mind on St. Pat's. Sadly, the band broke up in 2006, and I haven't been able to find the MP3 anywhere, so you'll just have to settle for the lyrics.

Danny Boy (R.I.P.)
by the Clare Voyants
lyrics by Shay Veno

I met him in a pub one night
In a crowd of well-to-do's
He had a claddagh on each finger
And a shamrock on each shoe
When he said "Top o' the mornin'"
My heart was filled with dread
Then he said his name was Danny Boy
So I shot him in the head

Raise up a cheer and lift your pints
and hold them way up high
And sing a song of tragedy beneath the Irish sky
From the glen the pipes are calling,
But he never will reply
For I buried Danny Boy beneath
the fields of Athenry

Tu-ra-lu (Tu-ra-lu)
Tu-ra-lay (Tu-ra-lay)
I thought I might drop him in Galway Bay.
Tu-ra-lu (Tu-ra-lu)
Tu-ra-lye (Tu-ra-lye)
Well I buried Danny Boy beneath
the fields of Athenry.

Well the Garda, they fell upon me
And they took away my gun
And a hush fell o'er the crowd
When they saw what I had done
Said the Garda, "God forgive me,
For I'm sure in hell to burn"
Then he shot poor Danny once again
To make sure he won't return

Chorus

Well, some call me a hero
And some call me a fiend
But they still sing his sad ol' song
While drinking beer dyed toxic green
But my sentence, it was commuted
It seems I'm off scot-free....
Well, I think I'll have another pint
And wait for Michael Flatley (MICHAEL FLATLEY!)

Chorus

There's also The Young Dubliners and the Dust Rhinos. I have a special fondness for their Jedi Drinking Test song on Got Guinness (it's also been covered by the Brobdingnagian Bards :)

Surprisingly, no one has yet mentioned "Another Irish Drinking Song":

It's sung by a group called Da Vinci's Notebook. No idea if they're Irish or not, but the song is hilarious.
