Pimp Your Stuff Thursday
Mar. 18th, 2010 10:52 amSpecial CoastCon edition. I had an absolute blast in Biloxi, and I thank chairs Jason Fisher and Alexis Tucker, all the rest of the staff, and especially my liaisons Theresa Anoskey and Raymond Boudreau, who went above and beyond time and again. I will definitely be going back. (Man, I am really liking the Southern conventions. Nothing at all wrong with the Northern cons, but... drop south of Kentucky and they're just unbelievably friendly and fun.) And the fun didn't stop there:Last but nowhere near least, I wanted to spend some time talking about my new friend, Toastmaster Jeffrey Breslauer, an actor of astonishing versatility -- and I think he actually does more voices than I do. Reminds me of
markbernstein with a bit more Gene Hackman in him, actually. He's done everything from Police Academy 5 and a well-regarded episode of the Swamp Thing TV series to working with the Muppets and being the voice of the Joker at Six Flags Over Whatever. He's written a childrens' book, and also does audio books (like Chris A. Jackson's Cheese Runner). All you really need to know about how good he is, is that he was a face character at Disney World, playing Dreamfinder (the human friend of Figment). He is a splendid and wonderful fellow, very entertaining, and his table was next to mine in the dealers' room, and by the end of Friday we had begun shticking around like crazy and it never let up. Ready, set... Pimp Your Stuff!
- First on the list is the incredible Lou Zocchi, who I didn't even know was still alive, let alone as spry as he is. For those of you who don't know him, think of Captain Kangaroo as the world's most pleasant used car salesman. His GameScience still cranks out the bizarre and wonderful dice, and he's still got Woody and the singing saw.
- Darlene Bolesny once started a series called Trail of Darkness for Wizards of the Coast, but it has, shall we say, an unpleasant publishing history. Years later, she's reworked it, and the first volume, Morticai's Luck, is available now. I got it from Edge Books.
- I was gifted a book as well, from (and written by) our very own
redneckgaijin. Peter is the Wolf is kinda horror-romance-funny-furry, with a first page that nicely grabs you and fine art and dialogue. (There are both PG-13 and NC-17 versions; I actually recommend the PG-13 -- it's got more story.) You can get that, and a lot more, at White Lightning Productions (parts of the site NSFW). - Artist GOH James R. Powell has some phenomenal stuff. I got a copy of "Titania" (fourth from the bottom) for my wall.
- I also picked up some good cheapie movies and music from Alternative Exchange.
- The Gulf Coast Gamers Club was very active, and they're at a lot of cons this year.
- Cons this year! Lots goin' on in the South:
- ReCon (gaming), Apr 29-May 2 in Cocoa Beach, FL
- MobiCon, May 14-16 in Mobile, AL
- Imagicon, May 21-23 in Birmingham, AL

Date: 2010-03-18 04:36 pm (UTC)The Literary Underworld (http://www.literaryunderworld) had a good MidSouth Con. We're now carrying Nick Valentino's Thomas Riley which is steampunk and Stephen Zimmer's new fantasy novel, Crown of Vengeance.
I will have nothing new until May.

Date: 2010-03-18 04:56 pm (UTC)at and early Frontier Wars one of the dealers[TAG i think] was having a clearance on dice they carried, and they had a tub like what they use for sponge bathing in hospitals full, and he said he would take 20.00 for the whole tub. he said theres were at least 1,000 dice in the tub. so I dropped a 20 on the table. we then kept 3 or 4 little kids occupied for a while sorting them by type and color, then went back and informed the dealer, there were only 994 dice in the tub. John Bowen and Dave Wesley had suggested a blowtorch
and we used several of the dice for a high impact test with a hammer.
sadly the entire box was lost in a car fire a couple of years later

Date: 2010-03-18 07:00 pm (UTC)I draw things! If people give me money, I can draw stuff they want! (Though I suppose it would make more sense to plug that when I have proper commission info up, but hey, a plug chance is a plug chance.)

Date: 2010-03-18 11:32 pm (UTC)"From the concrete canyons of the modern city to the halls of ancient kings, from deepest ocean to cosy homes in sprawling suburbs, nowhere and no one is immune to magic. But as many forms as magic takes, there always arrives a hero to accept the challenge, and sometimes, to pay the price.
The hearts and imaginations of some of today’s finest writers come together to create this one-of-a-kind collection of fantasy stories."
Authors include: Vonda N. McIntyre, Ursula K. LeGuin, Maya Kaathryn Bohnhoff, Judith Tarr and some chick named Sarah Zettel
