Trailers tend to look awesome. I plan to go see the movie if I have the money, but I refuse to get stoked about it. I'm fairly certain it will find a way to disappoint me. Also, I really doubt it'll be as good as the Vincent Price version.

That's been my beef with this movie so far. Everything I have heard about makes absolutely zero mention to the movie it is based on. I saw the book at a book store with a tag that said something to the effect of, "A fresh, new, original idea". And as much as I love Will Smith and think this would be a good movie, if they won't give the original some sort of credit, I won't give it a penny.

But maybe I'm wrong about the credit part.

Price, Heston and (now) Smith.

All three movies are based on the same book by Richard Matheson. None of them look like they pay more than a passing nod to it.

It seems to deviate from the novella quite a bit, at least from the trailer. I highly recommend the book to everyone. It's a short read, but worth every word.

I AM WRONG

The Last Man on Earth, the Vincent Price version, was based on a book by Richard Matheson called I Am Legend back in 1957. It seems that in the course of publishing the book, Tor seems intent as referring to it as book published in 1997. I can't find a single book sellers website that says anything but the ook being published in 1997 (http://books.google.com/books?id=NhAHaT7yZT8C&dq=Richard+Matheson&prev=http://www.google.com/search%3Fq%3Drichard%2Bmatheson%26ie%3Dutf-8%26oe%3Dutf-8%26aq%3Dt%26rls%3Dcom.ubuntu:en-US:official%26client%3Dfirefox-a&sa=X&oi=print&ct=result&cd=3&cad=author-navigational).

So, it seems both Hollywood and Tor is distancing themselves from the fact this is an older piece of work. Why? I couldn't tell you.

"I Am Legend" was a 1954 novella by the GREAT Richard Matheson.

"Last Man on Earth" was made in 1964. An Italian made film starring Vincent Price, from a screen play by Matheson. A damn fine movie, but in itself varies from the original story.

"Omega Man", 1971, starring Charlton Heston, directed by Boris Segal, without Matheson's involvement. Taken on it's own, it a great film, if you can ignore the bad makeup work and moments of over acting. And hey, Rosiland Cash is might fine.

Only time will tell if the new one follows the novella, or one of the movies. Looking over the credits, again Matheson isn't involved with the screenplay and they give credit to the screenwriters for "Omega Man". And looking at the trailer, it looks much more "Omega Man" than "Last Man.." or the original story.

Wouldn't mind them using the set up from "Omega Man", which isn't too far removed from the original story, but do the "Vampires" from the story and not the movie.

I saw a review which suggested that Smith would be playing the protagonist more as an "everyman," rather than the "austere, intellectual" character of the story.

I've liked him in most of the things I've seen him in...but I do wish I could believe that he would stretch himself some day. In fact, I wish that of most of the current crop of actors; there is a fine career to be had adapting the same performance to every role you play, and many of my favourite actors have done nothing else, but oh my gods, it's nice to see some acting once in a while.

Don't know about that. My friends took their five year old daughter to opening night of Land of the Dead. She sat in my lap the whole time. She loved the movie.

(I'm not suggesting this is appropriate for all kids. I'm just saying, this girl could handle a movie like that.)
