Oh man. Oh man.

There are lots of horrible things a person could have to face, but the gradual loss of one's cognitive functions has to be uniquely horrifying for a creative titan like Terry Pratchett.

I have something to say about those who oppose embryonic stem cell research, but I think I will save it for another day. I'll just say good luck, Mr. Pratchett.

As as member of the DiscWorldCon committee (August 2008, Birmingham UK), we heard about this a day or two ago but were asked not to say anything until Terry announced it publically.

He's upbeat about things but obviously talking to experts about this. He's asked that people don't send condolences or keep going on about his illness as he wants to concentrate on moving forward and staying positive. To that end he has confirmed that he will be attending DiscWorldCon (www.dwcon.org).

Obviously we all wish him well and look forward to many more books from him.

At least, if you're going down the Alzheimer Highway, this is the version to get. While not curable, it is treatable and people have had great sucess holding it in check.

Good luck Terry!

I'm sure he doesn't want our pity, but damn, that sucks.

He was known as an intellectual, because most of his tattoos were spelt correctly.

I'm glad to see he seems to be taking it well but still.

Feh.

Of all the things to get. "Dammit" and "bugger" just don't have enough punch for something like this. I'm pretty sure if it was me I'd be curled up in fetal position in a state of denial.

Good luck Mr. Pratchett.

Happily, being one of the beloved public figures in the UK, he's going to get the best of care.

Still, buggerit millennium hand and shrimp. Something's got to be done about this.

Luck and care indeed. I'd like to selfishly declare, "NOT HIM, DAMMIT!" but then I'd have to go into a list and we'd be here all day instead of living and appreciating and moving on and... yeah.

But still. Good luck.

I'll add my own thoughts and prayers for Mr. Pratchett. He's one of the authors I always meant to get around to reading, but for some reason never actually did. I think I'll have to start looking for the Discworld series asap. What's the first book in the cycle so that I might start from the beginning?

The Color of Magic was the first book written. But within the overall Discworld series there are subseries that follow specific people or groups. There's the Rincewind books (The Colour of Magic, The Light Fantastic, Sourcery, Eric, Interesting Times, The Last Continent, and The Last Hero); the City Watch books (Guards! Guards!, Men at Arms, Feet of Clay, Jingo, The Fifth Elephant, Night Watch, and Thud!); the Witches books (Equal Rites, Wyrd Sisters, Witches Abroad, Lords and Ladies, Maskerade, and Carpe Jugulum) and the Death books (Mort, Reaper Man, Soul Music, Hogfather and Thief of Time). Also, there's some books unrelated to any of those (including Small Gods, which is REALLY good) and some young adult novels.

My suggestion is to try one or more of Guards! Guards!, Wyrd Sisters, Mort and Small Gods for starters to find out if you like any of them and then proceed from there. The Color of Magic has its moments, but it really isn't the best one to start with.

(Why, yes, I AM an enormous Discworld fan, how'd you guess?)
