A few things for you today:
  • I don't believe I properly mentioned I'll be at KittenCon in two weeks.
  • Thanks to Eric Coleman, I'll also be at DemiCon in Des Moines, IA, May 14-16.
  • Here for your downloading pleasure is a very, very rough mix of "307 Ale". It's nothing close to final, and I'm definitely going to redo the vocals. If you can't tell at the beginning how rough it is, you'll damn sure know during the last verse. But those aren't the important parts.

The important parts are [a] the key and tempo are what they should be, and [b] I want all of you to sing with me.

Rev up your copy of Audacity or whatever, and sing along with the choruses (don't worry about the first one). If you want to sing along with the verses, too, or make boisterous barroom background banter, go for it. And then send me an mp3 (at least 64 Kbps, 128+ Kbps preferred) of just your voice -- either directly e-mailed to me, or e-mail me a link to YouSendIt or MegaUpload or wherever you stash files online.

VERY IMPORTANT! Don't put any effects on it -- dry vocals only -- and make sure you don't have my backing track in the background with it.

And, when I get the final version together, I'll cram as many of you in there as I can, and we'll have the biggest virtual singalong you've ever seen. Deadline is April 26 -- I'd like to have this in time for PenguiCon.

    Ready... set... pimp your stuff!

ETA: Gaaaaah. The arrangement got out of whack somehow. Give me five minutes to re-upload... fixed.

Ooh! That sounds cool! I may indeed participate.

And, ah...can I steal the idea? I have a song I'm working on that would totally benefit from this kind of treatment. It's my filk of The Beastie Boys' "Girls": "Brains!" (http://ebenbrooks.livejournal.com/316505.html)

Crowdsourcing the synth as we did at Lunacon, or the exclamations?

Either way, it sounds like fun.

(As does yours, Tom. I'll put my bit together in my Copious Free Time. Hah.)

I'm thinking the exclamations, actually. But the crowdsourced synth in the filk room was awesome! You guys rock!

I'm trying to imagine how you crowdsource a synth. You asked everyone to sing a riff after a countdown and recorded it?

It was a live performance, so I just asked everyone to sing the synth melody line while I sang the words.

Hey, I stole the idea from Coulton. (He had people send in hand-claps for his cover of "We Will Rock You".)

Do you want a single continuous stereo MP3 started at the very beginning? Easier to mix, though small timing variences between computers become noticable toward the end. Or would you prefer short, individual recordings of the choruses in mono so they are easy to sync, space apart and assemble?

BTW: this job is a breeze in Reaper. 100 voices, 100 tracks, mixed into a single group and then its output normalized. Hope you have a really fast computer for the 100 gates, compressors and room effects though :)

Which is why you use busses. :) One MP3, please. It's much, MUCH easier for me to slice-n-dice an MP3, or a whole bunch of exactly-the-same-length MP3s, to fit than it is to assemble the pieces.

Oh, I thought of a way to reduce the load on the computer. mix 6 audio tracks for the first chorus. Mix to a WAV. Mix another six for the second chorus. Mix that to a wav. Lather rinse repeat until done.

Then, for the first chorus, you use WAV1. For the second track, WAV1 and WAV2. For the third, WAV1, WAV2, and WAV3. This also gives the illusion that the bar is filling up with people as the song plays.

I'm planning something like that. Thing is, with rendering, the biggest potential problems with load tend to be [a] multitasking and [b] memory. So I don't do anything else while rendering, and I've got 3 GB RAM.

New site, new layout on Comicpress and Wordpress, updates Fridays and Mondays and there's a couple of months of new strips loaded in the buffer to prevent future hiatuses. C'mon over and browse the archives - they make sense!*

Yes. It's at the:
Naperville Holiday Inn Select
1801 Naper Blvd
Naperville, IL 60563
United States

Coming from Chicago you take I-88 West until the Naperville Rd Exit and go south. The exit is a little tricky and it turns you around. But you should be able to see the hotel from the interstate.

It's still pre-reg time where it's $40 for the weekend.

Tom, I want to thank you very much for mentioning our annual event on your Blog and we are *all* looking forward to having you here at the house.

In light of your concert here, I would like to make this announcement and invitation....

Any of Tom's fans within a hundred miles of Champaign, Illinois, are hereby invited to our home for Kittencon. We figure that any of you that we do not know already are just friends that we haven't met.

In the past, we've had the orignals of charcters from my fantasy stories, an internet porn star from Montreal, a scientist from Tasmania, a Russian professor from Nova Scotia, and two belly-dancing instructors.

Plus you get to meet the infamous kitten trumpinski-roberts, play with Robert Heinlein's (and Cardinal Richlieu's) favorite animals, listen to me reading my stories (and handing out autographed copies of unpublished works) on Friday night and see Tom sing and do improv on Saturday night.

Did I leave out home-cooked meals?

The University of Illinois is not having an event that weekend, but hotels still fill up pretty fast during April, so if you are coming, you should probably make reservations soon.

You can either send us all email at kittencon@gmail.com, or contact me at trumpinski.books@gmail.com for information on exact location of the place.

Tom

100 miles? That's just a tad bit further than KC... ;)

We wish we could make it out but it continues to be right smack in the middle of everything going on and in the last 6 weeks of the semester. How could that be changed? Do you think Kitten would make her birthday mid-May instead? ;)

*hugs* We miss the Borg!

PS Will you be at Duckon? I will!

Love,

This may be my post-con brain dealing with what is likely a fairly simple issue, but how do I get just my voice on the recording if I am listening to it to make sure I get tempo and such right? Yes, I will be using audacity. Thank you for any suggestions!

Speaking of con, Tom, I just emailed you pics from Millennicon :)

Easiest way is to use headphones. Have two files open -- one playing my file, one recording your voice. Send me that one.

I can has sale!!

From: [identity profile] saganth.livejournal.com
Since I just closed a deal on my first CD sale in 2 years, I will re-plug my filk CD. It contains over 40 songs totally almost 80 minutes of music - a capella filk covering Star Trek, Star Wars, Babylon 5, comics, Farscape, 2010, Dark City, Planet of the Apes and more. Hand-labeled (my production capability is very basic), with a printed list of the tracks included (can't make liner notes).

Available for only $12 (that includes shipping costs). And to be honest I could use some more sales - I am moving to Chicago at the end of April under very poor circumstances (both financially and emotionally) and could use all the extra help I can get!

The CD is good and worth picking up. I got it directly years ago and its a good mix of studio songs with a few live takes mixed in.

I have to drop you an email about getting some for a dealer to carry.
