Rickman was exactly appropriate. Think of it...Snape WAS a pedophile and child abuser. This film confirms it.
What does the one have to do with the other? Alan Rickman is an amazingly versatile actor, who was given a one dimensional character to play. Even with the Shariff of Nottingham there was change depth. Terpin started out as a perv who would stop at nothing to get what he wanted and ended the movie in the same way.
Musicals on stage have to be blatant. Never have I seen or been in a stage musical that was blatant. The whole point of a musical is that sometimes, emotions just can't be expressed in simple words. A good musical ('cus there are some that are just trash) can play to a 2,000 seat theater or a 200 with the same impact.
Local stages didn't want to put on this play because they thought only gorehounds and pervs would be interested, and it would be a hard sell to the general public. Now it's possible they might do the Sondheim original in a theatre in Des Moines or Orlando.
Or Utica, NY. Oh wait, The local community theater performed Sweeny Todd two years ago to a full house every night.
If Sondheim made the changes to this, fine. I can't argue against that. But everything I had heard made it out to be TB doing all the editing. i.e.: Him filming the Ballade with ghosts of the victims singing it but pulling the scenes later.
And the point of the play IS an old-fashioned horror story. On the other hand, the story of this play/movie reaffirms the principles of classic horror,Obviously not popular with you guys in the Grand Theft Auto generation.
Has never played GTA, will never play GTA. Is off to finish re-reading "The Phantom of the Opera" for the seventh time.
