I'm not sure. Maybe its more like a cursed item. Everyone who has ever owned it ended baddly.

I'm not sure about superpowers, but that was an interesting read for the gemology involved. :)

Hi Tom,

I'm putting together the filk track for ConFusion. Love to have you do a concert on the Saturday afternoon. Please call me at your convenience at 312 590 9625. My fault for leaving things late.

Yes, I did call him. Yes, I have got a concert at 'Fusion at 4:00 pm Saturday. And a panel on comedy songwriting with [livejournal.com profile] trumanburbank (Grant of Throwing Toasters) at noon Sunday.

I'm working Ops from 2 to 6 on Saturday. I'm getting really good at missing your concerts. ;P

The panel sounds good, though.

Cool. Maybe I can get it replicated on some personal gear. Although I'd personally prefer a blue or green glow.

The diamond known as Hope is normally associated with a state of Blue
When exposed to ultraviolet rays, it becomes associated with a state of Red

I sense something political...

As I recall, Mxyzptlk created Krimson Kryptonite, and it simply turned Superman human, with no other effects (except that if Luthor divulged the secret, Supes would turn back, which is what happened).

Perhaps this is a promotion by DC for the upcoming War of Light story arc. Let's see, the Red Lanterns embody the emotion of Rage. Uh Oh.

Now to find us a green gem to fight back!

It can turn tin cans into aluminum cans, but only one at a time.
Wonder how long it would take someone to recycle those cans to get enough to pay off the loan needed to buy the diamond?

Not that long, but it requires one hell of an assembly line.

Anyone standing within two meters of the Hope diamond can only speak the truth.

Now, how do we get it out of the Smithsonian and smuggle it into a White House press briefing?

It gives the owner to transfer death. Yes, the death diamond has the mystic force of death transferance, allowing anyone's death to be shunted to another person. Formerly on the uniform of the Grinning Reaper, the gemstone actually comes from the planet Omegachron where it was used as a corporal punishment device before the world was destroyed by an experimental antimatter toothpaste.

Sadly, no human knows how to properly utilize the mystic forces within. And left unguided, the gem will naturally kill the owner of the gem itself. This is why the gem, called the Hope Diamond on the little planet the natives call Earth, has a reputation for bringing ruin and doom upon whatever human possesses it. We don't know why they call it the Hope Diamond though - humans are funny little critters.

Peh. Only the "curse" of inciting greed and violence among its owners. I think of the old toothless cobra Thuu in the Jungle Books warning Mowgli that the jeweled elephant-goad is Death. So it is -- because men kill each other trying to get it.

None, it's really a Stealth form of Red Kryptonite.

That's why it's so clear under normal light - pretty clever, those Kryptonian scientists! They predicted that the Hope would change like this after going through the radiation belt that converts ALL of the different types of kryptonite into their more dangerous forms!
