As of a few minutes ago, a barrel of oil was over $106.00.
Here's a little site which helps put our national problem in some perspective, and which will also help you find local gas prices: Gas Buddy.
What are prices out your way? The other day, I was looking at $3.16, and that doesn't seem to have changed... yet.

Date: 2008-03-06 06:01 pm (UTC)But Costco and Arco usually have the lowest prices, and they're generally within $0.15, so I'm guessing about $3.20 or so there. And I thought filling up at $2 a gallon hurt.

Date: 2008-03-06 06:25 pm (UTC)I live in a town that used to have some of the best gas prices in the state (you know, by 5-10 cents), and was often commuting through another. That's changed, alas, and now we're one of the higher places in the state, but I do at least get to drive through those slightly better areas on a semi-regular basis. Of course, the drive costs me about 25-30 dollars a trip...
grr.

There are rumours flying that it'll be $4 by the summer. That's so depressing.

Date: 2008-03-06 08:29 pm (UTC)Just over 4 years ago I left a job doing field IT support. The pay was good, but I drove my own car 1-3000 miles per month (in addition to personal mileage) in exchange for a mileage reimbursement. Boy am I glad I'm out of that mess.
The pity of it is that if I could make my schedule work around it there's a bus that would run from a spot about 3 miles from my doorstep right next to the building I work in downtown. Unfortunately I can't quite make my schedule fit that, not without seriously inconveniencing some of my coworkers.

Date: 2008-03-06 09:29 pm (UTC)When oil first went over $60, I predicted that the economy would melt down somewhere between $60 and $100. I don't really understand why it hasn't happened yet, but one thing that I was not expecting was that the increasing oil price would not be fully passed on to the retail price of fuel. Nobody but oil companies actually buys barrels of oil; what matters is the price of refined products. If gas goes to $5/gallon (which is where I thought it would be, back when oil was under $60, if oil should go to $105), consumers are really going to be squeezed. If diesel goes to $5 a gallon, consumer inflation will spike, and if the Fed tries to control the inflation by raising interest rates, it will be like 1932. But if the oil companies remain content to make so much money on the crude end of the business that they're willing to give up their profit on turning it into fuel, we can continue to muddle through until the foreigners we've mortgaged our country to so we could have our SUVs seriously start calling in their loans.

"Yeah? Well, ExxonMobil 3:16 says 'Gimme your damn wallet.'"
