I'm currently playing in a RPG set out in the desert, and one of my friends flat-out declared that his character is based on the Fremen. I am totally pointing everyone to this song. Thank you so much! =)

Whoa, it is the slowed down lounge version of the song. :D

Wha-at? It's roughly the same tempo as the original. Although I look nowhere near as good as Crystal Gayle did back then. MmrrrrOWWRrrr.

"Roughly." The version of it you've got on Homecoming: Marcon 2005 runs 2:04 (of which 0:12 is introduction and 0:08 applause); this runs 2:36.

The ORIGINAL original, i.e., Crystal Gayle's recording of the original. And I do play it faster live. Here's Crystal singing it (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5JNtxeJLQ4). My new version is indeed a touch slower than hers, and I have a couple of extra repetitions of the refrain just before the bridge.

I don't think I've ever heard Crystal Gayle's song and have only known the version from Who Let Him In Here? :D My perspective is probably a little warped by being exposed to your music when I was 16 well before I had read Dune.

I highly reccomend finding Crystal's original version of the song. She's a class act and one of the best voices I've ever heard.

And, OK, the backing chorus ("Muad'dib, Muad'dib...") killed me.

This was the first true filk song I ever heard, via a roommate's borrowed tape, and MY gasp of terror as I saw the joke coming hooked me on filk for good. I've been inflicting it on everyone I know ever since. :) One of the most truly brilliant things I've ever heard--it hasn't gotten tired after a LOT of listenings. Do you know, I'd heard it for ages before I ever got the stillsuit reference? :)

Funny, same here. First filk I'd ever heard, and I still cringe at the joke. :)

The most cringeworthy line, imho, is in "House at Cthulhu Corner". I had read the lyrics, so I knew all three puns in that line. I was lucky enough to be paying attention the day my wife _finally_ heard what you said. :-)

This is my second-favorite song for Freaking The Mundanes Karaoke. The only reason it's not my favorite is that Dune isn't as familiar to J. Random Mundane as Superman is, so I tend to go with Renee's "Lex Luthor's Lament" first. "Rotten Robin" works pretty well too, but I sometimes trip over my tongue on that one.

...and the collective gasp of terror as the audience saw the joke coming was enough to hook me on performing for life.

It's moments like that you live for.

"Oh my god! The punchline! It's HUGE! And it's HEADED STRAIGHT FOR US!!!"

When I picked your MarCon live cd at last year's Gen Con I saw the title Crystal Gayle Killed Frank Herbert and for the life of me I couldn't figure out where you were going to go with it. Then I listened to the song and howled with laughter. I love a good pun, and I really love the horrible ones. This is in the top then of my favorite songs you've done. :)

Ah, fond memories of hearing that Tom Tune for the first time in, yep, 1986, and thinking, "Ack. He really IS going to do that. This is REALLY not a well man. I admire him a lot."

As Hendrix said, "Play on, brother."
