Tomorrow is (well, really, every day should be) Earth Day. And tomorrow we'll come up with ways to save the world.

But it ain't tomorrow yet.

And Yahoo! Movies has a list of some of their favorite cinematic apocalypses. What are some of yours? I'm staggered that they don't list things like the original Godzilla, Triffids, Audrey 2....

My fave cinematic apocalypses...

1) THE COMET! IT BURNS! IT BUUUUUUUUUUURNS! (Night of the Comet.)
2) Uh, somebody dropped a test tube... (The T-Virus, the Resident Evil series.)
3) I think we'll call the planet 'Bob'. (Earth go boom, Titan A.E.)
4) Anyone else here a molecular biochemist? (Planet Terror.)

They totally left out getting hit by another planet.

(When World's Collide)

Great movie.

Not exactly -- that would come under the category of Giant Falling Rocks. But, as many of these short-attention-span lists do, they largely forget about movies older then they are, unless they've become so iconic for one reason or another (e.g., Planet of the Apes, Dr. Strangelove, Night of the Living Dead, Night of the Lepus) that they can't be ignored. As a for-instance, one would think the Viral Outbreaks movies would include, oh, The Andromeda Strain and, um, Outbreak, let alone The Stand (which may not count as it's a mini-series, but hey).

Last Night, a small Canadian indie starring Sandra Oh. Worth checking out.

I'd put The Stand in my own list, as well as The Omega Man and Soylent Green if they count.

I've heard Ben Stein is making a new movie. It's about how gay marriage would completely destroy western civilization.

Oh. "Apocalypse", not "apocalisp".

Neeeevermiiind.

Shaun of the Dead. Nothing says end of the world like an outbreak of zombies.

And some dippy filk that needs more verses:

Happy Earth Day, ugh!
Happy Earth Day, ugh!
Doom, destruction and despair
Icecaps melting everywhere
Happy Earth Day, ugh!

Now THERE's one I wish they'd re-make! The computers and the logistics were all so clunky and dated.

What bugged me about that was the biology. When you have anything that mutates, it doesn't ALL mutate the exact same way. You have two varieties, the old and the new, and you have to deal with both of them. Even if the new one is harmless, the old one is still out there.

Well, Crichton is not known for being accurate about science. See any of his recent works, especially State of Fear.

Hmm, would "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes" count as an apocalypse, or just a veggiecaust?

You left out Miracle Mile (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0097889/) and Cafe Flesh in the '80s post-nuke derby. The former is a must-watch, one of the best of the genre. The latter? Not so much.

And nobody mentioned Blade Runner (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083658/), which may or may not be post-nuke or might fall more in the category of post-global warming. And there's also the Mad Max Trilogy which is also quite cagey about the whys of its post-apocalypse setting. Of course The Road Warrior (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082694/) was the best of the lot there.
