We saw Iron Man yesterday. I loved the hell out of it. Great superhero movie, good movie overall, which is of course the real trick. Agreement with the rest of the FList: If you haven't seen it, GO already!

Speaking of "GO", it's one of the tags for the next big summer movie, opening today. Unfortunately, the consensus on Speed Racer seems to be "YES, GO ALREADY! YOU DANG KIDS TURN THAT CRAP DOWN!" I still might see it, if only for Goodman and slobber pant drool Ricci. You? What's your moviegoing/DVD-watching weekend looking like?

Indiana Jones marathon in prep for new movie.
Maybe some of the Valentino stuff I tivo'd on the 6th.

It's going to be a Summer of Swashbuckling at Chez Mudd. Indy all May. Robin Hood variations all June (I'm working on a Robin Hood novel for Julnowrimo): Disney, Robin and Marian, Prince of Thieves, Fairbanks if I can get a copy. Probably a rerun of Flynn (saw it back in March). Men in Tights is on heavy cable rotation.

I'm hoping for a chance to watch Rick or Winter Solstice or Bubba Ho-tep on Monday when the kids are gone.

I'm between discs on my Great X-Files Mainlining (goal: see all nine seasons, plus the first movie, by the time the new movie opens) and Netflix probably won't have any new ones in my mailbox before Monday, so I'll probably just stick with anime. Or The Prisoner, which I haven't moved on in months.

Way behind, as always, on movies, and don't think I'll be caught up for a while. I have my brand new season eight Simpsons DVDs, as well as more standard TV fare (Lost and Doctor Who), as well a whole bunch of DVDs I am behind on as well.

Will note that while I will probably see Iron Man eventually - I'm just enough of a DC fanboy that I am not that excited, even if I know Robert Downey Jr. is never bad - Speed Racer does nothing for me. The old cartoon just never grabbed me. I like the casting, though.

Episodes 4 and 5 of the current season of Dr. Who. Likely more episodes of Torchwood S1. More HP fanfic. If I can find a working cassette player I trust, tape conversion or two.

Going to movies is now on my "Can't do that because it costs too much" list- plus the only decent theater with digital projections is 20 miles away- one way.

So, I'll wait for the DVD.

Ricci is looking awfully thin now.

I can't believe I'm saying this about some celebrity -- but I worry.

I probably won't go to see Speed Racer. It looks like a highly detailed poor animated cartoon, which only improves on the original in one way.

The only way I'd go see the movie is if I hear that the words don't match the mouth movements. THAT would be worth seeing. :)

I was excited at first about Speed Racer, especially when I heard John Goodman had been cast. The man is perfect for that role, as he was for Fred Flintstone. Not to speak ill of the dead, but he's sort of a more dignified version of John Candy.

But the more trailers I see, the less interested I am. It looks like the sort of thing that could cause motion sickness, if not seizures. I keep wanting to yell, "Okay, Brothers Wachow...Wazzow...Matrix Guys, it's very shiny. We're all impressed. Now put it back in your pants."

But speaking of things shiny, there's one movie I simply must see on opening night. Two words: Fedora. Whip.

Okay, three more words: John. Williams. Soundtrack.

John Goodman? DIGNIFIED? What planet are you from?

Dignity - Never had it, never will. (That's ME, of course!)

You'll note I said "a more dignified version of John Candy".

That's a bit like being "a taller version of Danny DeVito".

Caught the midnight show of Speed Racer last night, and it was everything I had hoped for: generally substanceless, but oh-so-very-much fun to watch. For sheer entertainment value, it might have exceeded Iron Man, though not in terms of being a better movie by any stretch of the definition. Speed Racer, though, is just fun.

I'd say go see it. Expect to laugh your head off, along with the Wachowski Bros., who were clearly having the time of their lives making it. And hold on to your seat - it really does move fast.

Saw Iron Man last night, and loved it, with only minor quibbles (mostly of the "Come on, no human being can take that much impact without breaking bones" variety). Downey was perfect, and while I'm not the biggest fan of Paltrow, I liked her in this.

I may see Speed Racer. I have a hunch that it'll work for me if I go in thinking of it as an amusement park ride instead of a movie. :)

That was how I enjoyed the Dungeons and Dragons movie in the theater. I told myself ahead of time, "This is going to be the worst movie EVER, and I am going to laugh my butt off at every campy second of it."

And it was. And I did.

I agree with your summary of Iron Man. I can understand a bit of comedy relief, and the testing sequences were the right place for it, but I swear, they acted like Tony Stark is Wile E. Coyote's second cousin or something.

(I also wonder what they were thinking, having Tony do all his testing in the same place where he keeps all those pretty, pretty cars, but that's trivial in comparison.)

I _have_ to see Speed Racer.

Whether or not I'll like it, I have to see it.

Why? Let's just say that I've been hooked on that show since I was extremely small. "Oh, Speed! What are we gonna do?" was heard to echo from my playroom by my mother more than once. (And she never lets me forget it either.)

Has anyone seen the LATEST new Speed Racer cartoon on Nickelodeon? I haven't managed it yet and was wondering...

This weekend I need to see Iron Man (missed going to see it last weekend) and may try to see Speed Racer as well. I will see Speed Racer on the big screen, even if it means waiting to see another movie on DVD later on. Given that Sunday is Mother's Day, I may only get one movie this weekend instead of two (almost forgot about that, it changes my Sunday plans).

I can already tell I'll be saving a LOT of money -- again -- this year. See, I'm a moron who wants a STORY and CHARACTERS in my movies, not just 3 hours of a 13-year-old-boy director masturbating with the special effects budget.

And don't get me started on "geek-boy-scriptwriter takes a dump on women" movies -- oops, I meant "romantic comedies."

I loved Iron Man (saw it Tuesday). Not sure if I'll make to Speed Racer or Netflix in it. I feel almost obliged to see it. I used to torment my parents and my grandfather singing the theme song over and over. Kimba, too.

Saw Iron Man last week when I was up in Chicago, and the mood of the group was that we really liked it. Sure, it does take a table-sized grain of salt to believe some of the action, but hey, it's a comic book!

Speed Racer is the movie I've been wanting to see the most for the summer. It appears from the trailers that the W Brothers may have pulled off the impossible: Making it look like a modern day anime while remaining entirely true to the original. Perhaps I'll get the chance to see it this weekend.

this weekend will be spent watching the Indy movies (anyone know what will be "extra" in the Special Edition releasing this Tues?)

and rewatching Narnia

movies I MUST see: Prince Capsian and Indy IV

I keep trying to convince my friend of WHY it is necessary to see the movie opening night (midnight show if possible)

only thing I remembered from the Speed Racer cartoon was the Mach V because I wanted a car like that!

Hadn't thought of rewatching X-files before the 2nd movie comes out!!

You should go see SPEED RACER. It is fun. The critics panning it are idiots who have apparently had their "child-like wonder" glands surgically removed.

I think I know why some people think it is a bit of flashy fluff sans story. This is an old school Good Guys versus Bad Guys movie, updated with bleeding edge special effects.

This is the movie you would have dreamed up when you were 9 years after spending a Saturday morning munching on Sugar Pops and watching Speed Racer and Johnny Quest. The reason the critics don't get it is that the world of Speed Racer is a child's world: eye popping colors, insane visual effects, and cars, cars, cars.

The effects editing is brilliant and is absolutely integral to telling the story throughout(Must. Resist. Giving. Spoilers.)

More importantly this is the story about...(wait for it)...Family Values. It is the story of what it means to be a family and what it means to follow your dream for the right reasons.

I know I'm going to get barbecued for this, but SPEED RACER has a far more complex plot and more pathos than IRON MAN. Don't get me wrong, IRON MAN rocked HARD. IRON MAN had better acting, but SPEED RACER was a better story.

SPEED RACER is the shiny two-fisted fusion powered world of the future you dreamed of as a kid.

Watching it makes you feel like a kid again. If you remember the least bit of what it was like to be a 9 year old kid sketching out race cars in the margins of your school books, then you will like SPEED RACER.

Go Speed Racer Go.
