DVD Day. Special edition of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Sold separately, so you don't have to buy Temple of Dumb. Also Last Crusade, but that can wait until after MarCon.

Anything else we need to know about?

ETA: Okay. First, Kmart has Raiders for $12.99, same price as Amazon. And they sell popcorn!

Second, Jayzus H. Crisco. The main screen video for the DVD is one of the coolest I've ever seen. They use a -- nope, nope, not even gonna tell you. Just get it.

omg, I love how you put that, "temple of dumb". I loved the original Raiders, loved Last Crusade, wanted to strangle the blond in Temple. I'm already fiending for the new one....

Murphle. Kate Capshaw. Spielberg dumped Amy Irving for that. Gaaaaah. No accounting for taste.

obviously. I think part of the reason I enjoyed 1 & 3 was the strong female characters (especially Miriam in the first film). In Temple, we got a useless dumb blond who screamed waaaaay too much. Indy needs a strong female for balance. Which is part of what made the 3rd film so fun, when both Jones the elder & younger discover they'd been with the same woman. "you're old enough to be her father", giggle snert...

I am so glad to know that there are other people out there that did not like ToD. I thought it was a waste of film, for the most part... though the feast scene was worth some time.

I will agree that the feast scene was great. And the kid was cute. But it was (and still is) a disappointment.

Actually, from what I can tell, most people didn't like it. Every once in awhile, Anne finds somebody who says it's their favorite of the three, and she sincerely asks them why.

Full agreement on ToD. Emminently skippable.

I'm trying to see if there's any reason to buy this set as opposed to the older box set released in 2003. As near as I can tell this isn't a remaster or anything of that nature. They just dumped the 2003 dvd release in with a few different extras and repackaged it. Am I missing something?

Apparently the extras on that set are on a separate disk. The new disk has extras on the disk. If you must have ToD, there's also a new set of the special edition of the trilogy, the "Adventure" box, that Amazon is selling for about four bucks less than the earlier release.

I'm not particularly interested in owning ToD, but if I can get a good deal on the box set I might get that anyway. Again, it depends on how the extras are packaged. No rush. It's not like they won't re-release the whole thing again with Crystal Skull.

personally, I'll just wait. If this is in fact the last Indy film, then around Christmas they'll do a "all four movies" box set (with assorted extras). I'll buy it then.

I won't. Still involves buying ToD. Capshaw, Short Round, chilled monkey brains. Bleah.

I got the old boxed set a couple Christmases ago, and never watched the second one; it provided support in the box to keep the others from tipping over.

Daughter, on the other hand, has just decided that Indiana Jones is the coolest thing ever except for maybe Iron Man, and wanted to watch all three movies on Sunday. She realized her mistake when it got to the feast scene...and overall, it was worse than I remembered.

I can only conclude that the film was brought to us by the great cocaine epidemic of the '80s, or something. They even changed the lettering in the opening titles and didn't use the "Indiana Jones" theme, ferchrissake...

...and it doesn't sound like the special editions are sufficiently special to warrant a repurchase, which was my big question.

My kids are constantly asking to watch Indiana Jones. For some reason they rarely put in ToD. I have found that if there is no other Indian Jones movie avaliable I'll turn it on but then I go and do other things while it's on and don't miss much. With the other two I will sit nearly riveted watching them and will actually pause the movie to go to the bathroom and get popcorn and such.

ah, I was going to ask what is so special about the "special edition" as I have the older DVDs and really didn't want to rebuy them.

so there aren't any major scene changes like Han NOT shooting first??

Biggest change so far is that Marion does a duet with Meat Loaf. Oh, and, instead of offering the whip for the idol, Alfred Molina swings over the pit with his four mechanical arms, singing, "If I Were A Rich Man".
