I so hope Ventura runs for Congress. I *was* going to vote Franken, but if Venturs runs, he has my vote just like he got my vote in 1998 for governor! :)

...huh.

Where the heck did I get the impression that he was gonna disagree with me on things? I was almost literally startled to hear his first remark.

The trouble is that his style of governing was very confrontational and divisive. He has great ideas -I voted for him, after all, based on principle- but in practice he didn't get too much accomplished and only managed to make people even more angry and bitter than they were under a Democrat or Republican.

I liked Ventura but I would not vote for him again; he's more valuable as a pundit and philosopher than as a leader, IMHO.

...which is precisely why I hope Keith never takes it in his head to run....

I love it! To paraphrase: "Why are we even talking about this?" :-)

I always maintained that Jessie "had a clue" about things. A shame he got so many jokes and wasn't taken seriously. IIRC he's a US born citizen and can be president unlike other actor/governors.

This isn't the first time I've heard this idea, but Jesse is the most prominent mouth I've heard it come out of. I've loved this idea since I first heard it.

Jesse Ventura rocks my socks off even when I'm barefoot.

I dunno about Jesse Ventura as a politician, but what he just said is exactly so.
Marriage is RELIGIOUS thing, and it tends to also be a rather SEXIST thing, as well.
As an atheist and a feminist, I consider myself in a civil union with my male partner - not a marriage.
I further think that civil unions should be an option for non-romantic dyads, as well as for groups of people.
Civil union creates a family unit - it doesn't seem to me to matter whether that unit is romantic or practical (imagine two heterosexual elderly ladies whose husbands have died, but who wish to join forces financially and legally in friendship, but with the same protections as they once had with their spouses), between 2 or 10 people.
Of course, the legal ramifications would be staggering.

While I think that he'd do well on the public scene, Ventura is too direct to ever be elected to the Presidency. Building a power base large enough to be elected President these days generally requires a lot of compromise to be able to put together enough people with disparate views to get elected. Obama seems like he's been able to do that with his platform of unity, but I think that Ventura would be too blunt to be able to walk that line.

However, I DO agree that he'd be great as a political pundit, or just as a political speaker in general. Oddly enough, what he's talking about in this video follows the Libertarian line (as I understand it) much more closely than either the Democratic or Republican lines. Government out of personal life, keep the church and state separate, remove tax-exempt status of churches that take overt political stances. I'd love to see him host his own show, running opposite Limbaugh or one of that crowd.

Well, at least you know where he stands. Like a lot of libertarians, I find him so surprisingly sensible I could weep with relief, on about half the issues, and so scary-ass wrong I could scream, on the other half.

Not this year. I want Franken. I've wanted him ever since Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot. Seems to me, Ventura jumping in would split the quirk vote and send the Coleman the Colorless back for another six whole years.

What I've been waiting to see since Nixon was president: Buchanan squirming under direct confrontation. Why that took thirty-five years and a former pro wrestler to accomplish when it could've been done by anyone with a half-gram of common sense, I don't know. Cheers for Brother Jesse, regardless!
