I stood today with a walker.

Did it several times, actually. No real problem except figuring out the exact leverage. Leg didn't complain much at all. And Jeff, the PT, said, fantastic, I'll talk to Adlai (the guy actually in charge of my leg) on Monday and we can start taking a few steps.

And I said, Can I try now?

And I moved the walker forward, and moved my left foot forward and didn't put too much weight on it, and dragged my right foot forward quickly. And then I did it again. And again. And again.

And when we left the room, I asked, Let me go as far as I could, which I didn't do. I went about forty feet, and I think I could have gone the whole, maybe 150 from that point back to my room.

And, once back here, we did a chair-to-bed transfer. No prob.

Bed to bathroom. No prob.

Bathroom back to bed. No. Prob.

He doesn't want me to do anything without a spotter until we've discussed stuff with Adlai, so I'm probably not gonna do any more until Monday.

But.

I'm walking again.

Well done sir. When I was on the walker with my bionic hip replacement, the physical therapist told me the way to remember which leg leads when going up or down steps.."The good leg goes to heaven, the bad leg goes to hell" (ie when going up lead with the good leg) The nurses weren't too happy about that memory device, but it's stuck with me for 7 years...Keep up the good work..

Go you! Just be careful and listen to your keepers. Make sure you know how to tell if you're pushing too hard, in case it doesn't hurt until too late.

Yay hooray!

We just don't appreciate a simple basic thing until we have to do without it. Like, for example, walking.

A number of years ago, I was in hospital with IV catheters in both arms for several days (because they didn't want the medications to mix or something). One doesn't appreciate "bathroom privileges" until one no longer has them.

My father has a mild case of Parkinson's that affects his balance. He usually has to lean on something when he walks around, but he doesn't want to use the walker (that he has). When it is my turn to have a mobility disorder, I would darn sure use a walker than not get around, I'll tell you.

Nobody really knows how hard anybody else's physical therapy is, so I'll just say I hope your continued recovery goes well.

woo hoo! Best news I've heard all day.

Never will forget, after my own surgery a few years back, finally getting to the point where I could go charging up something resembling Lombard Street and not be winded at the top... I've lost some of that, alas, but I'm working on getting it back. But that feeling where you're sweaty but not totally bushed and you got to where you wanted to go? Nothing like it.

Here's to a lot of it for you.
