A Day

I've basically blown today off. I did all kindsa stuff yesterday, including get out for a few hours. Les picked me up, and we went off and looked at potential new living space for me. More stairs. Exhausting, exhilarating. And I got the stuff from the Pretzel Productions box (yes, InConJunction, I got your incredibly lovely package -- and it will make its first public appearance at OVFF, methinks). And had dinner at Zingerman's. A sit-down, bring-us-food dinner.

(Remember that person who sent me a letter, saying "Talk Like A Pirate Day" had inspired him to go to sea and really become a sailor and shipwright? I've got a couple of postcards from him along the way, from England and if I recall ['cause I can't go check it right now] Scandinavia. A few weeks ago, having heard I was hurt, he sent me a baseball cap from Victoria, British Columbia -- I guess one of the local teams is the Pirates, it's got a fantastic logo -- and a cute little keychain he picked up in Japan. Holy FSM, I sent this guy traveling the frickin' world. So this is what humble and proud feel like together.)

Today, much much less activity. A little web work. A bit of anime (Anne's got me watching Death Note -- way cool). Tomorrow, a little more work, and then some serious PT Monday and forward. I love NuStep.

You?

Went to Frisch's for lunch (was supposed to be breakfast, but I slept too late) with my buddy Doug. Had an awesomely delicious grilled ham & cheese with grilled onions added into the sandwich. Went back home and fell asleep again an hour later. Sleep was the thread for today :)
Tomorrow I should be awake significantly earlier and also longer, and I want to get some gardening done. Specifically, I need to thin out my serrano and cubanelle pepper plants and transplant the biggest ones. Yum.

My wife and I decided to splurge a bit and Wii got a game console. Wii like it too. Can you guess which one? ;-) Wii Sports is pretty fun and while it's a little bad on the graphics side I tried the first Avatar game and it was pretty cool.

On the flip-side I got out of the house with my father and a friend an did something I haven't done in roughly 20 years.

We went target shooting at the archery range. My fingers have never been so sore but damn it was fun. I used to do that on my grandmother's property in Wisconsin so many years ago. Damn I've missed doing that...

Gawd. I had one archery class thirty-plus years ago in high school, and I still remember enjoying it....

I found out something strange today too. I shoot with my uncle's old Bear Polar compound bow and I've always thought that the way that bow "felt" was how all compound bows "felt". Well it turns out not.

My uncle's compound bow he taught me on and that I shoot now is not so much a compound bow but a recurve with gears. This explains why during archery in high school I kept getting "Don't draw the bow so hard! You'll break it!"

I guess I've been over-training all these years on a 65 pound bow with no "let off".

Sorry - geeking out about the archery thins today. ;-)

Today the Husband and I played our biweekly Champions RPG. Now I'm loading stuff on my new (hand-me-down from the Husband who really got a new) laptop.

If you like anime, I suggest Blue Seed and Azumanga Daioh.

I'll second both of those. Blue Seed is a pretty spiffy serious SciFi anime and Azumanga Daioh is just pure mindless fun.

I sat on my ass all day and read the new Temeraire novel.

I really want to believe it's the book and not the depression that kept me from doing anything more.

Cool on package. Really, we're glad to hear you're doing a HELLUVA lot better.

And, well, looking forward to next year.

ONE of these years, I'm'a gonna make it to OVFF. Crys has been telling me that I need to actually go to a con/event where I have NOT a thing to do...the idea seems really alien to me. :-)

Not only do you have to do that thing... you have to go to OVFF for the music. Really. I mean, there's just something about it. Many of the same people are at GAFilk and FilkOntario (two other cons I have great affection for), but there must be somethin' in the water down Dublin way.

So, why not this year? ;)

No good reason, balancing school, student loans, and making sure I can get my girlfriend there.

And as of this moment, it all sounds good to her, too, so we shall see. :-)

I drove a bicycle tourist across the Ambassador Bridge because Kwame couldn't be bothered to help him get across any other way. He's a 73 year old guy riding all the way to New Hampshire via Canada.

I totally agree. I love NuStep. Last March I was having back problems that ended up with a herniated disc that was pressing on a nerve that was causing me to fall down and go boom. Wasn't ready to be a cripple (not even 50 yet at the time) so I finally got off my a-- and into an exercise program at a local retirement center. Not crowded and they have great equipment including the NuStep and a warm water therapy pool. I love the water. With a waterproof MP3 player (that has mostly your music on it right now) I can go about 1 1/2 to 2 hours a day on various machines and in the water.

Keep up the solid work. It's a pain but it'll be worth it once you're walking again without pain and help.

After doing all that stuff Friday, it's probably a good idea to rest today.

My big chore for the day was scrubbing out litter boxes. Oh yay.

I spent most of the day watching the Olympics, and desultorily tidying up during commercials. I've been using my stationary bicycle a lot today, especially during the swimming events. The faster they swim, the faster I pedal.

Hugos - Blink. Stardust, Yiddish Policeman's Union, File 770, Locus

I don't know the rest off hand. I gave my copy of the list (Thank you Kathy Mar) to someone else who was typing them up.

Winners site goes live in about 30 minutes.

Hugs!

Getting ready for GenCon, learning my new position with the business department at Charter.

Played 4th edition D&D. Have very mixed feelings about the game.

Ate chinese food - I blame watching the opening ceremonies for the Olympics - very pretty.

We went to the WI State fair, had some fair food (hand dipped corn dog, root beer float, deep fried cheese cake on a stick...)

Then we saw Shooter Jennings, 38 Special and Charlie Daniels' Band. We even got back stage to meet Charlie Daniels and get autographs, but did not have a camera, so no picture.

Death Note eh? I'm not familiar with that one, but I'm so far behind on what's current in anime it's not even funny anymore. I don't recognize half the titles. I've just been buying older titles as I see them on sale cheap. I think the newest (chronologically) show that I've seen is ... Chrono Crusade? That and I've been re-watching old favorites like The Irresponsible Captain Tylor, Fushigi Yuugi, and Maison Ikkoku.

Yeah, they are. I'm a bit over the top for Maison Ikkoku at times. I realized that one day when I thought about how many forms in which I have the story.

Old VHS fansubs? Check.
Digisubs? Check.
Illegitimate Hong Kong DVD set (prior to US DVD release)? Check.
Licensed US DVD release? Check.
Old "flopped" English translation manga? Check.
Unflopped English mana? Check.
Wide-ban original manga? Check.
Various miscellaneous souvenirs and artbooks? Check check checkity check.

Quick, someone release it in another format so I have something to look forward to.

Simple premise: There are shinigami, basically a race of what we might call Death Gods, and they have notebooks called Death Notes. If a mortal gets ahold of a Death Note, by any means, they can see and talk to the shinigami whose Note it is. And, if they write someone's name in the notebook, that someone will die within minutes or seconds.

So this one almost-college kid, Light Yagami, gets ahold of the Death Note of a bored shinigami named Ryuk, and decides to kill off evil people to make a better world. Oh, and he'd be the god of said better world. Muh-wuh-ha-ha-hah.

I've got a few problems with the logic (oh my FSM is there a lot of logic, in some ways it's The Adventures Of Dueling Exposition Lads), and it suffers from a few of the basic problems of Japanese anime/cinema, e.g., every little revelation is met with horrified gasps of surprise. But it's stylish, clever, it's got more twists and turns than a pipecleaner sculpture of the Well of Souls, there's a catchy theme song, and it's just pretty damn cool. Oh, and, ladies? It's slashy as all get-out.

DeathNote has become a fave of mine as well. i have managed to get a hold of the first 29 episodes and the first 7 of the manga books. i just love the complicated, involved schemes they main characters either set up or get involved in. and yes, you are right about the *gasp* and the dueling exposition lads. LOL.

on another note, (and i am sure you have answered this already but i missed it) i did not see your name in the DragonCon guest list. are you going to be able to make it? glad to hear you are back to mobile again! hope your recovery continues to go well!

Sorry I didn't reply to this for awhile -- busy, busy few days. No, I'm not gonna be at Dragon*Con this year, for a multiplicity of reasons, none of which are related in any way to the capper, my bum leg. It is possible I will be at D*C in the future... but it'll be on my terms. And those terms may be too much for D*C to accept. I've tried not to burn any bridges, and D*C is still a lovely fun time, if you're prepared for it. We'll see.

sorry to hear there are troubles with D*C. i'll have to catch you at another one! do you ever make it to Necronomicon in Tampa? or Megacon? i have been getting by with my cd's and mp3s of your stuff, but i need a little 307 ale, talk like a pirate, and boy and his frog live! i try to keep up with what you post in your blog, but can't always remember what is next.

and no worries on the reply, i wasn't expecting one, just wanted to add mine to the well wishes! glad to hear you are up and mobile again! i'm sure you have already been asked this, but will you write a song about the whole thing? full metal filking, maybe? hazard pay for singing? LOL!
