I've always been a picky eater. Not nearly as bad now as I was when I was a kid, though. Literally, at this point there are likely fifteen or twenty foods I've firmly ruled out, mostly through having tried them multiple times and deciding I'm just Not The Audience for that particular flavor. (Licorice is the most blatant that leaps to mind, followed by asparagus.) When I was a kid, there were only fifteen or twenty foods I liked.

Which leads us to The Foodie Meme, courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] selenesue .

The Omnivore's Hundred is a list of foods the gastronomic Andrew Wheeler thinks everyone should try at least once in their lives.

The rules of the meme:
Bold those you have tried.
Strikethrough those you wouldn't eat on a bet.
Italicize any item you'll never eat again.
Asterisk any items you'd be interested in trying but have not yet.

I also think there should be an option for, "tried it, s'okay or not to my taste, not likely to have it again, but I'd be fine if that was all there was to eat". A number of things above, mostly seafood (which kinda surprises me, actually), would be on that list.

There were a few there that even I had to look up. But you sound just like my "little" brother, who eats more things than he did when he as actually little and it amazes me. How you get so big eating food of this kind? [/yoda voice]

Coffee

Jamaican Blue Mountain IS good, but I find pure Kona to be its equal, and Kona is not as expensive as JBM.

The key here is getting the correct roast for the beans which is a medium to light roast rather than dark. When correctly roasted, both of these coffees have a floral bouquet which is very pleasant, and leave a sweet finish in the mouth. Some Kona coffees have a note of chocolate in the flavor.

(Note: Neither of these coffees are cheap -- last time I looked pure Kona was going for $25-30 a pound, and JBM for twice that.)

Ahhh, Poutine! Death on a plate! Mmmm...

French Fries mixed with half-melted cheese curds, smothered in gravy, and drizzled with either mayo or sour cream ... I've seen it both ways! Tasty, tasty, tasty!

Another thing Canada has, in addition to its health care, over the United States!

Yours,
Sylvan (Dave)

Some tasty things you haven't tried yet! Some of which are very fixable. For instance, if you have the means to make loose tea, Adagio has sample size tins of Lapsang Souchong for $2, and I can send you a $5 off coupon if you like (just tell me what email address). Dragonwater (probably my fave tea company) has several varieties of Lapsang Souchong, with sample pouches going for around a buck. The Tea Table has a couple of varieties as well, and they charge less than $2 an ounce.

It's too hot to mail Pocky, but I'm pretty sure one of the stores I regularly shop at carries wasabi peas; I could send you some if you like (and if I am not misremembering).

Of the starred ones, clam chowder in a sourdough bowl, frogs' legs, eggs benedict, and soft shell crab are the ones I've had and would gladly have again... spider roll (soft shell crab as sushi, either maki or hand roll) is one of my favorite rolls. (Yes, the crab is fully cooked, usually tempura.) I haven't had Jamaican Blue Mountain but I've had some pretty fine cups of joe out here in Coffeetown (let's put it this way, I passed by Starbucks Corporate HQ on the way back from lunch today... and that's considered crap coffee by most of the locals)... it's a whole different world out here WRT coffee.

Ironically? *thinks* I know you can get the chowder, eggs, joe, and spider roll within walking distance of here (FSVO "walking"; if you start from Pike Place Market, "walking" is pretty short).... I don't know where to get the frog legs for sure, but maybe at New Orleans (the name of a restaurant, not the once-flooded remains of a town in LA)...

Hm. I think I can find all but about ten items here. Hard to say which would be my favorite... definitely pass on the spam, though. :)

i will have to actually go through and do this correctly, but i was amazed at the first read through of all the things i have actually had. as to nettle tea, that is a very old survival trick that my father and i teach to our backpacking classes - stinging nettle tea and pine needle tea, both good, good for you, and easy to make. pine needle tea actually gives you more vitamin c than orange juice. i tend to be a carnivore, though, so not much on the plant end of things. i could live off of correctly cooked alligator. (i am Floridian with Muskokee Creek and Cherokee ancestry). as to coffee, i think it is something evil. i like the opinion of the Lakotas that it must be medicine - anything that tastes that bad must be good for you! LOL!
yeah, i'll be doing this one. i generally don't like things to forward, but this one looks like fun!

I'm very squeamish when it comes to food, so I'm very picky when it comes to previously alive food. No snake for me. Definitely no haggis (sorry Scotland. I still love ye). I saw a video of the grossest supposed food I've ever seen in my life. They were baby Octopus tentacles, but they were still moving because they had just been, uh, separated. It was horrifying. The video was taken in a Korean restaurant, and the person eating it was just enjoying the heck out of it. I'm not a vegetarian (used to be), but that seemed absolutely cruel to me. God only knows what happens to the octopi after this is done. I hope for their sake they die quickly!

You haven't tried alu gobi? That's a rather innocuous, and fairly tasty, cauliflower and potato dish from India. The Indians also know how to make okra taste okay, but I wouldn't recommend Indian eggplant. Also, mirch ka salan (curried hot peppers) is for true spice fiends only.
