I thought about it. I even cracked "I want my BIRTHDAY CAKE, Bedelia!" in comments at Eschaton. But then I thought, well, it is the guy's birthday. Give him a straight-up good wish; he's a human being too. Which is about as far as I think I'll go.

Today is the birthday of John McCain, Michael Jackson, and Michael Kube-McDowell.

So much for astrology, eh?

Apparently, the Gloved One is 50 today. I won't say that makes me feel old, but it seems strange nonetheless.

I've never met the individual in question and thus have no first-hand proof of your assertion.

ext_4831: My Headshot (D&D Pro-Obama)
From: [identity profile] hughcasey.livejournal.com
I loved the fact that last night, Obama praised McCain for his patriotism and service to our country, and at the same time, McCain aired a commercial congratulating Obama and calling it "a historic occasion". It was a nice change before we jump back into the bloody battle.

I think that it was Jefferson who said, "It is possible for men of good conscience to disagree." There are times when the "Democratic" view is better, and times when the "Republican" view is better. Situations and needs change as history rolls along. We can disagree without demonizing each other. No single woman or man holds the truth... the only way we will find it is to communicate with each other.

I agree. I was pleasantly surprised by the ad but now it is back to regular programming.

Oh man. Now I feel kinda sorry for the guy.

When your opponent lays out one of the most astounding speeches in recent history...right before your birthday? Ouch.

Oh well. :)

Obama picks the anniversary of the March on Washington and the "I Have A Dream" speech for his special day.

McCain picks... his own birthday. I still wonder who his VP candidate will be, we will know before day's end but somehow it seems anticlimactic.

If it had been my birthday, I would have combed through the "this day in history" columns to find something a little more profound, just to make it special. Of course, my birthday happens to be Bill Of Rights Day.

Apparently, it's Governor Palin from Alaska (http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/08/29/palin.republican.vp.candidate/index.html).

OK, I'll buy that. Whichever way this election goes, some history will be made.

Reagan vs. Mondale, 1984.

;)

Okay, it was perhaps one of the most one-sided elections in history, and even the fact that it was a presidential election probably makes it a little historical.

Still...

First woman candidate on a major ticket. First time a presidential candidate said, out loud, (paraphrasing) "He says he won't raise your taxes -- I tell you, he will."

Oh, for the love of Pete...how could I have forgotten Geraldine Ferraro? That was huge news at the time.

As for the taxes thing--I hadn't thought about that comment before. Probably got Reagan several states.

To be specific, he said, "Mr. Reagan will raise taxes, and so will I. He won't tell you. I just did (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walter_Mondale)." You can even see it on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJClXb8vQpY).

He should really spend more time with his family. And I don't just mean that as the now-traditional code phrase for "He's done."

Seriously, I do wish him a very happy birthday, with many more to come.

I didn't know he was on board the Forrestal during the period when it became nicknamed the "USS Forrest Fire." That was surprising.

Gee, 1936?

That makes him 2.3 months younger than my (late) father.

(The father that I don't talk about. Not going there any further than that.)

As far as "things older than John McCain", I add my mother...by exactly 1 day. When I told my Republican brother that I thought McCain was too old, he reminded me of this fact. My reply?

"But I don't want Mom to be President either!!!!"
