Aw, damn. Singer/songwriter/actor Jerry Reed has passed away at the age of 71. When I was a teenager, and me and my buddy Paul Denton were skipping school, the Smokey and the Bandit soundtrack was our primary road music. And he won a Grammy -- one of several -- for this one:

And to show you the other side:

We'll miss you, Jer.

Ah man. He didn't sound good last time I heard him live on the radio (he was filling in as a guest DJ in Sirius 63 Outlaw Country).

And "Eastbound and down" is still an industry standard.

Living in Nashville I heard about this quite often today. I'm not sure how much interest there will be in the rest of the country, but a great talent was lost today. Damn but that man could play a guitar.

He'll be missed by a lot of music fans, especially those who love the guitar. The man was a master, even did a duet cd with Chet Atkins. Talk about a clinic on guitar playing.

to quote Mater: Ah, dang...

Jerry was one of my favorite performers, and the Smokey & the Bandit music is appropriate to any road trip.

I guess it is a disappointment to me because that song when your Hot Your hot always made me smile when I heard it on the radio.

Nuts. I think I remember him best for "Amos Moses", "Another Puff", and a guest spot on Scooby-Doo.

Oddly enough, I remembered him from a short-lived, four episode series called Nashville 99. It was a police procedural, in which Reed (no relation, sadly) sang the theme song and was the lead actor's sidekick. Pity the series never took off: he might have gotten some dramatic acting cred.
