It's hard to get over it when the mass media are either out chasing the most attention-getting story, or actively acting as conservative propagandists. I'd like to see the next mass demonstrations in New York, Washington, and LA march on the networks.
Mmmmmmmm..... good idea. Protest NBC for semi-canning Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews.
Oh, as for the message, Scalzi has something in a similar vein (http://scalzi.com/whatever/?p=1649). Basically suck it up and prepare to fight, *hard*, or face losing.
The thought occurs to me that the way the GOP fights - to win, at all costs, with no thought to ethics at all - is not dissimilar to the way certain other fundamentalist groups fight, half a world away.
After apologizing to the rest of the world for the mistakes of idiots, we beg Canada as our nearest neighbor to invade and rescue us. We can even promise them that unlike Iraq, we really do have weapons of mass destruction to be found.
Canada? We have a leader who ignores laws that he, himself, campaigned to institute; who, in spite of having no effective opposition is costing the country a boat-load of money in order to extend his political power; who has nothing positive to say about anything, including his own plans, and would rather spend all his time taking cheap shots at his opponents. You say you need a new one of those?
(This is not a partisan comment...if we replace him, the replacement is likely to have an alternate set of disgusting characteristics.)
Or at least common in the Western Europe and her former colonies. The UK has it too, with Labour turning neo-con, and yet no alternatives people are willing to vote for. And then there's Sarkozy in France and Merkel in Germany. There's probably a reason for this, but right now I don't feel like trying to figure it out.
"A reporter once asked vice-president Quayle, 'What would you do if you were suddenly thrust into the office of the presidency?' Quayle's answer: 'I would say a prayer.' Oh, wouldn't we ALL!" -- Mark Russel
I think I am going to use the contact us button and tell MSNBC that if they had not been doing convention coverage for both parties I would not have watch a minute of the conventions, but watched Keith's show to get the information I needed about what happened at the conventions.
Unapologetically liberal here. I'm sort of the opposite of my father in law. He thinks Pat Buchanan is too liberal, I think Barack Obama is too conservative (voting for Obama anyway, of course.)
I'm sorry, but that reminds me of Superman's reaction to hearing about the Substitute Reserves, "People who, for one reason or another, weren't quite ready for the Legion of Substitute Heroes":
"Not ready. For the Legion. Of Substitute. Heroes. Rao, give me strength."
Of course, until the DC Presents between Superman and the Subs, with Ambush Bug running amok through 30th c. Metropolis, the Subs were a decent group. Too bad someone got the idea they could be comic relief.
And I've read some of the older Legion stories, with the Subs actually being competent. Handled correctly, they can make for decent Legionaires. And it's the mark of good writing to make them so, to find a situation that showcases their powers.
But really, they were rejected by the Legion. It's not that great a leap to assume they were rejected for a reason.
