I thought the quote was "Do not anger a bard, for thy name is silly, and scans to Greensleeves".

"United Airlines" scans to "Mud".

I usually base it on the original (http://www.quotationspage.com/quote/27745.html) and quote it as "Do not meddle in the affairs of bards, for they are subtle and quick to anger and your name scans to Greensleeves".

Wow. Thanks for sharing... Though I have to wonder why the link to Dave Carroll's website, including the section on it containing the story of how all this happened, is suddenly rated "403 forbidden." You can't even access the home page of the site...

That's because the legion of Tom Smith fans have probably overwhelmed the servers. Yup, something like this gets posted in by Tom and with a mighty "BAAAAAH!" heard around the world his secret army clicks on the link and floods the internet.

Use this power for good, Tom, not evil. Or if you do use it for evil, serve cookies.

And as proof of the power of music, United is now ready to ... well, hopefully say something besides "no."

I saw that article. As for United's comment on the whole thing...

[[“This has struck a chord with us, and we’ve contacted him directly to make it right,” said Robin Urbanski, a spokeswoman for United. (Urbanski also said she “loved” the video.)]]

Struck a chord???

This spokesperson has a WARPED sense of humor. Must be one of their more intelligent employees. Hopefully, her IQ will remain below their firing radar.

See also Tom Paxton's Thank You, Republic Airlines, For Breaking the Neck of My Guitar (http://www.themadmusicarchive.com/song_details.aspx?SongID=10214).

I think it was on the album "In Ten Years, We're Going to Have One Million Lawyers"> Anyone know?

Just went to check my records and the actual album name is "One Million Lawyers and Other Disasters" and yes, "Thank You Republic Airlines" is the first song on the album.

And later (as a result?) Republic Airlines was absorbed into NorthWest Airlines, and was no more.

Before this, though (and before I knew of Tom Paxton's song), Republic lost my sister's suitcase for a day, but my guitar made the transit okay. (As carryon luggage, I think.)

This has been some years ago (my father died in 1994) but my dad had a similar experience with Delta Airlines. He only had one hand and played a handmade wooden guitar that was shaped like a dobros that he barred like a steel guitar with his hook but had the soft sound of wood. It was literally worth thousands of dollars even then. He flew to South Carolina on Delta and they forced him to check the guitar through as baggage. Of course the inevitable happened. It took six months but Delta eventually paid for the repairs. In fact, an agent of Delta actually drove out to the house, picked the guitar up and took it to the repairing person my dad specifically chose and then delivered it back to my dad when it was done. Very, very fortunately there was no loss of sound quality.

And there's something wrong with me...I watch this, feel sorry for the guy and mildly upset about the guitar thing......

But what I'm really thinking is, "ZOMGBBQDDR!!! That guy's HOT!!!"

Some years ago, my mother gave me a fancy chess set. To get it across the country, I packed it into a box, cushioned with assorted clothes, and checked it, clearly marked fragile.

My seat was directly above the baggage compartment. After we landed, I saw the attendant drop the box four feet onto the cart, causing it to accordion slightly. Unfortunately, that proved enough to bend one of the feet of the board.

Eventually, I was able to get the damage unbent. But Southwest's attitude was "we're not liable for fragile items."

I'm hearing bad things about a lot of airlines these days.
Not real fond of how tightly they're packing people on every flight on all the airlines so there's no resilience let in the system for things like bad weather and delays, either.

Apparently, air travel is not economically possible. I predict a massive exodus to Amtrack, once the national light rail system is up and running.
