Thanks to Mark Evanier for linking to a straightforward chart of the McCain and Obama tax plans.

There was another version posted somewhere that had the bar widths weighted by percentage of population, but I can't seem to find the link.

That would be nice

Though I'd be even happier to see, not percentages but numbers, to know whether Obama's plan represents an overall increase or a decrease in the federal budget.

Although I'm not really sure it matters. Even Bush the first changed his budget ("Read my lips; no new taxes") when he started really doing the job. One of my objections to Bush the 2nd was that despite radically changing conditions, he did NOT change his plan to cut taxes. He's fundamentally unable to admit to a mistake.

McCain's "Just tell me when I've EVER flip-flopped" on the TV show, "The View" doesn't bode well, either.

A glorious little microcosm of both candidates' policies, ain't it?

Very nice chart - cuts through all the BS and shows where each stands. As I was aware, Obama is not planning to tax the average taxpayer, just the fat cats who have been getting 8 years of Bushco tax cuts.

Of course this may all change once all these bailouts are done, the money has to come from somewhere after all.

Very nice side-by-side comparison of what each candidate whats to do related to taxes. I certainly like Obama's plan better, but noticed that the difference between the two plans would be only $280 for me. I figured the difference would be higher, I guess that I am now in the tax brackets where it is not as big of a difference. I also noticed that Obama's plan does not have a big overall change but is putting the burden on the people who make the most instead of the least. Taxes definately need to be more proportionate so hit felt is the same by everyone (if that is even possible).

I would also be interested in seeing a chart of current tax percentages. Part of me suspects that the dramatic increase in taxes for the upper bracket of Obamas plan are already paying les taxes -- percentage-wise -- than those in lower tax brackets. It would be pleasant if Obama's plan is actually normalizing taxes up-and-down, but to confirm that we'd need a similar chart of current taxes.

I'd be curious to see exactly where each candidate's family fell on the chart. Anyone know where to find a rough income level for each?

Here's the story. (http://www.usatoday.com/news/politics/election2008/2008-04-18-mccain-taxes_N.htm)

Amusingly, the McCain numbers don't include his wife's income. She's worth at least $100 million, owns a very successful beer distributorship, and has refused to reveal any financial details while pouring money into her hubby's campaign.

Thank you for satisfying my curiosity. It's what I was expecting, to be honest. Interesting that Obama's advocating what will amount to an increase in his personal taxes, while McCain's wife is at the top of his proposed tax cut stack.

And in the end, it makes no guarantee that either of them will stick to their proposals. I can hope, though.

Something's wrong with that; it's a representation of tax schemes, but it's understandable. That's not how things are supposed to be!

Someone's gotta confusify it quickly or people might start having a clue what the candidates are talking about.

The thing is, this is out the window and toast. The new question has to be: How are you going to come up with the funds for the bailout?

Because back-of-the-envelope calculations say that the US in 2010 is going to resemble Brazil in 1984: Broke, and staying that way.

Forget anything they said about the economy before last Thursday: How are they going to deal with the situation NOW?
