Damn sad thing. Hell of a life, too.

What's your favorite Newman role? I've always loved him in The Hustler. And his voice work in Cars gave that movie a gravitas you'd never expect from such a cartoon.

Also, what's your favorite Newman's Own food? I go right back to the beginning, the microwave popcorn. Although the lemonade ain't bad at all.

I don't know very many of his movies, but Newman's Own salad dressings - especially the balsamic vinaigrette - are amazing.

I gotta go with "The Sting"... although, yes, "Cars" was good too.

Food.... you gonna make me choose? I think the pasta sauce, actually. Though the salad dressings, the chocolate, and of course the popcorn are all very good. And the lemonade and limeade. :)

I tell you what was the best, though, was the little stories on the side of each container. No ordinary ad agency would come up with that stuff. :)

He had a hell of a run at it, and the world is a better place for his presence in it. He'll be missed.

The Sting has been one of my favorite movies ever since I saw it (in the theaters, in its initial release). Newman was well over half the reason why.

I'm also a popcorn guy, but couple it with the lemonade (hold the salad dressing, please :-) and you've got the perfect snack...for watching The Sting

He'll always be Butch Cassidy to me.

My favorite Newman's Own is the tomato sauce (different varieties).

My niece [livejournal.com profile] ladysoapmaker loves the Newman's Own animal crackers, because they're soy-free; her son has a severe soy allergy and couldn't eat most packaged food.

Ugh, no, that is not what I wanted to hear, ever really.
I think I got a baby crush on him back when I saw "Hombre" in the early 80s. I was about 12 :P He was such a good actor, and a very decent human being.
Favorite Newman's Own product would be Ginger Os. It won't be the same now that he's not around anymore.
And this makes me worry about Robert Redford, too.

I was never a Newman fan but The Sting is a great film.

I love the Newman's Own Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups! You can usually find them in the natural foods aisle if your supermarket has them at all (and has a natural foods aisle), right near the Kashi products and Clif bars. REALLY good.

Ummmm....you are going to make me choose which movies I liked him in most? The Sting and Cars (just because he is a totally kick-butt race car driver too).

As for the food, I have enjoyed the salsas Newman's Own put out...but the Balsamic Vinaigrette is hand's down the BEST stuff on the planet for a salad in the pre-made dressing category.

The pretzels. Though I liked the dressing until I made the mistake of using it on too regular a basis whiel on a diet.

Newman, to me, was a great actor who tended to appear in a lot of not-so-great films (not exactly an unique thing in Hollywood, alas). Things like Twilight and The Verdict and The Sting and Butch Cassidy, films that had great moments but are by and large forgettable except that he was in them all. Of this group, Butch Cassidy still stands out, and makes me wish he had done more Westerns.

I also have to mention Exodus, which I never saw but which made my mother swoon long before I was born.

You need to see Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, my friend. Like now. Not one but TWO great actors in the film of a great play (although it was bowdlerized a tad, this being the homophobic 1950s movie industry): A young, hunky Paul Newman opposite the cinematic divinity that was Liz Taylor in her youthful prime and nothing but a flimsy slip. Between the script, these two and Burl Ives as a truly scary Big Daddy, I defy you to call it "forgettable."

Cool Hand Luke, Butch & Sundance, The Sting, Hudsucker Proxy, and Cars. What the hell are they gonna do about Cars 2 now? Write Doc Hudson out and lose that gravitas? Who else could possibly play Doc Hudson?

Anyway, when I go to the supermarket tonight I'm picking up some Newman's Own popcorn, lemonade and spaghetti sauce. If they're not sold out.

Hudsucker Proxy and The Verdict. Not a question.

The Limeade. Damn, that stuff is the nectar of the gods when combined with Captain Morgan's Private Reserve, Tanqueray, or even Pimms No. 1. Dangerous, too--I could easily get sloshed off my feet forgetting that those things are alcoholic. Sockaroonie sauce and the Diablo salsa are pretty nifty, too. They gonna keep selling those things and donating the profits, even with him having passed on, right?

Lots of favorite roles... Cool Hand Luke, Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid, The Stin, Slap Shot, The Hudsucker Proxy. But I think my favorite is gonna have to be Where The Money Is; he plays a con man in a nursing home opposite Linda Fiorentino as his nurse.

Screw Obi-Wan Kenobi. My favorite movie trickster-teacher of all time is Newman's Henry Gondorph from The Sting, right from the moment we see him snoring drunk on the floor, smushed up against the wall.

["He scares you?"] "Right down to my socks! We're talking about a guy who'd whack a pair of grifters over a piece of money that wouldn't support him for two days!"

["He's not as tough as he thinks he is."] "Neither are we, kid."

"Always drink gin with a mark, kid, he can't tell if you've cut it."

"Four jacks."

And no words at all -- just that smug, gleeful way he cackles and rubs his hands together during the train poker game.

I've got to toss The Towering Inferno in there. OK, it may not be Hud or Cool Hand Luke, but when you consider it is the only film that stars the two coolest actors to ever grace the silver screen, Paul and Steve McQueen, you have to watch it at least once. Even as dated as the cinematography might be, it still holds up as one of the best "disaster" flicks ever made.
(can you imagine the cool overload if Lew Harper traveled to SanFran and teamed up with Frank Bullitt?)

As for his products - The Five Cheese Sauce and the Fire Roasted Tomato and Garlic Pasta sauce...yummy...and now I've decided what I'm making for dinner tonight.

Oh...word of advice - don't view the video they currently have embedded on the Newmansown.com website unless you have a hanky handy...sniff...

Also, his Tuscan Italian and the Asian Sesame Salad Mists - if you're on a diet, they're AWESOME. They add almost as much flaver and lubrication as regular bottled salad dressing, but you use a LOT - I mean a LOT less. One bottle of the mist (which actually contains less product than similar-flavored bottled dressing) lasted me right at a month of once to twice-daily salads.

Alright, so call this weird, but one of my temp jobs was working for Kraft, and they had a test kitchen. One of the test items was a liquid microwavable popcorn sauce, in flavors like nacho cheese, and garlic butter, stuff like that. Others tasted more like salad dressings, so at some point, I started putting my own salad dressings on my own popcorn.

Getting yummy popcorn and awesome dressing only adds to the flavor delight, and Newman's Own salad dressings are pretty awesome.

I actually did this a few days ago, ran out of dressing, and thinking I should get more. Then Brice calling, saying he was eating plain popcorn, and I said, "Yeah, we're out of Newman's", and the headline the next morning saying he died. I guess we're ALL out of Newman's now. :(
