Sep. 30th, 2008 04:54 pmUnless you want to become really, really pissed off. No matter which side of the bailout question you're on.
I am very serious. If you want to pursue the political stuff, go for it. If you're just not in the mood right now, avoid it.

Or maybe they just don't care. I don't know.

Date: 2008-09-30 11:02 pm (UTC)Alas, I'm pretty sure THIS plan shall backfire as well, because they're making the same mistake Democrats make Election Year after Election Year...
They're overestimating the intelligence of the American people.

Date: 2008-10-01 01:26 am (UTC)Except that the Crown Prince chosen by the GOP's movers and shakers (Romney) was discarded by the Republican electorate, as they spoiled the plans of their betters by crowning McCain instead.
My guess is that the voters were ratifying what he had stood for 4 years before, when he stood against Bush, spoke common sense, and lost. Any of those voters who actually pay current attention enough to re-evaluate that decision, would probably find enough reason to change their minds now.

Date: 2008-09-30 09:43 pm (UTC)Um. Followed by worrying that the Republicans won't vote for a good package if we manage to get one together in the next few days.

Date: 2008-09-30 10:25 pm (UTC)Which, by the way, is the same thing I told someone who said this was all a plot by the Democrats because "everyone knows that people will vote Democrat when they're more worried about their jobs than their scruples." (her words, not mine)

Date: 2008-09-30 10:45 pm (UTC)Ramps up the anti-Republican feeling nicely for the rest of us, though, doesn't it?

Date: 2008-10-01 12:16 am (UTC)No, something similar would have happened that would have been much, much worse. For one thing, I'm not sure the concept of "strategic financial regulation" existed back then, and if the internet had been around, that probably would have effectively extended the panic to everywhere with internet access. There were stock crashes worldwide in 1929, where there were stock exchanges. Add the internet, multiply the number of stock exchanges (most likely) and drag more countries into it -- stock crashes, bank collapses, and bank runs all over the world.
By the time the topsoil finished blowing away over half of North America, there would have been a much different world.
Strangely, people living in large world cities almost effectively had the internet, in terms of what tasks they were capable of performing remotely, by the late 1890s, telecommunication and globalisation had gotten so far. What receded the first great wave of international commerce and communication was World War I...

Date: 2008-09-30 11:52 pm (UTC)Well, nice to know they've their priorities...while the Republic crashes and burns, they're busy fiddling the system. But hey, as long as they score points off the democrats, they win! [never mind that we all loose.]

Date: 2008-10-01 12:04 am (UTC)I don't think it's even the slightest bit logical anymore. I think it's an addiction. They found out how to manipulate the system, and now they can't stop. They don't live on remotely the same level that you or I do, and I'm not talking about MEANS here - if I had 0.1% of their coin I'd live the same way I do now, but with a more free time and comfort - but in terms of how their brains function. Doing whatever they can to make more money and power is like a VICE to them, like alcoholism or compulsive gambling (but without as much risk for failure). They don't have friends, they don't have hobbies, they don't relax, they don't even enjoy their money, and they never even retire - you'll notice, many of these people are old as fuck.
I'd almost pity them if they weren't fucking over the rest of us so thoroughly.
To quote Londo...
Date: 2008-10-01 02:13 am (UTC)And that about sums it up for me. I can only hope that people wake up and start throwing politicians and Suits out of high windows claiming that they committed suicide due to the market crash.
In the meantime I'm working on storing provisions and saving cash...

Date: 2008-10-01 03:13 am (UTC)Between that and the selection of Palin, I do begin to wonder if McCain was set up by the GOP.
No surprise
Date: 2008-10-02 03:39 am (UTC)But cynical enough for someone 3 times my age (which would be 153 for those who care).
While this doesn't directly affect me (I'm Canadian) the fact that the Conservative Party of Canada seems to be slavishly imitating the Republicans does. We are in the middle of an election campaign right now, and I'm hoping that the ABC Movement (Anybody but Conservative) his some luck.
