Y'know, making death threats against a presidential candidate is a federal crime. These folks should have police wading into the crowds to arrest them.

McCain and his followers act as if they are above the law. They make me think of Germany in the 1930's. They scare the heck out of me.

Very well put. It always seems to be that way with people who think that they "are doing the Right Thing", however wrong it is.

McCain doesn't see the problem (or maybe his hearing's just going) and his followers don't realize that shouting these things in public is likely to get you some unwanted attention by men in black who've had their sense of humor surgically removed. I don't know if it's a crime like talking about bombs at an airport but it wouldn't surprise me. I agree that there should be undercover agents in the crowds but with thousands of people and only a few of them, it'll be hard unless somebody else who hears them turns them in.

Not police. Secret Service. Who, fortunately, just happen to be on site.

Funny how they're not performing that aspect of their job, though.

They were talking out both sides of their mouths on it last time I checked - simultaneously saying they were looking into credible threats and ceasing the investigation.

Which is to say, doing exactly what their bosses occupying the White House do.

Isn't it nice that impeachment (a) can be performed after someone leaves office and (b) supersedes pardons?

Cite for the claim that someone not in office can be impeached?

I'd seen it mentioned recently in various blogs, but hadn't followed refs (and can't find those entries). But here's what The Big G turns up:

Bush/Cheney Can Be Impeached After 2009 is an abstract of Kalt, Brian C., "The Constitutional Case for the Impeachability of Former Federal Officials: An Analysis of the Law, History, and Practice of Late Impeachment" . Texas Review of Law and Politics, Vol. 6, which says This article considers the constitutional case for the impeachability of federal officers after they have left office. As a practical matter, while it may rarely be worthwhile to pursue a late impeachment (as with regular impeachment), this does not change the fact that it can be done, or that certain facts may make it desirable.

The 35 Articles of Impeachment and the Case for Prosecuting George W. Bush by Dennis Kucinich is being offered free by Feral House as a PDF download. From the post: David Swanson’s additional article explains how the Impeachment process is possible and necessary even after the guilty perp leaves office, and how they can be used for prosecution of crimes.

I can find more, if you really want me to hunt.

Enh, I'm generally convinced that the Secret Service people are a combination of decent and kind of hard core, which leaves me scratching my head as to what was going on there.

Though checking the news today, I did just see that they're looking to get their arrest on about some comments at yesterday's Palin rally (http://www.scrantontimes.com/articles/2008/10/15/news/doc48f6128d24004210022010.txt).

(I love the comment on that article claiming the recordings of the person shouting "kill him!" are hearsay. Hee.)

I've never seen Keith shout like that. I've seen him livid with rage, but never shouting.

I suspect a bit of his fury was aimed at the so-called journalists whose only concern about the hatemongering is how it may affect McCain's poll numbers.

I think he's been riled up as much by Bush but he did really work himself into a lather last night.

Well, the good news is Obama is about 15 points ahead in the polls and will most likely win the election. And on the lighter side, have people seen what the Brits thing of S.P.: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/cifamerica/2008/oct/03/sarah.palin.debate.feminism

PS: Let's wear our Obama buttons hats & t-shirts at OVFF. Ohio could still go either way.

I read the text of the speech by Lewis. McCain totally rejumbled the words to make it an unfounded accusation of racism instead of a warning against inciting a mob. No honest person with two brain cells could have gotten that from what was really said, and LEWIS should be demanding an apology.

Well said, Keith.

Even if we're spared the misfortune of having McCain and Palin in office, that sentiment of rage is still going to be around. I fear for what may come of that.
