IIRC, Representative Bachmann actually praised Joe McCarthy. PRAISED him and said bringing back HUAC would be a great thing.
Fortunately, President Obama ain't likely to request such a thing, and a Democratic Congress won't bring it up on their own. It's even possible that Bachmann herself may lose because of her diatribe. Her Democratic challenger raised over $600,000 in the last 48 hours from donors who sent a message to the effect of, "At long last, Rep. Bachmann, have you no decency?"
That, and the $1M the DCCC pumped into the district. Combine that with Obama's coattails in the state, and Tinklenberg looks to be in pretty good shape.
The real fun is watching people try to claim that there is not a clear and substantive difference between the candidates and their campaigns--that they are as bad as each other.
Or it would be, if anything about this bore the remotest resemblance to fun any more.
I've said it other places, but it bears repeating. At this stage, the polls are clear: the more these wingnuts talk, the wider Obama's lead gets. Let 'em spew their nonsense--I can deal with these morons for another 13 days. NOBODY IS LISTENING TO THEM ANYMORE. The demographics of the US have changed fundamentally in the last 8 years, and not just in the big cities. I will be a little scared until i see Barack Obama take the oath of office on January 20, BUT if these people are the best the repubs can come up with as supporters, then we're fine.
At this point, my best guess is that the repubs have essentially given up on this election, and are hoping to make a comeback in '10 or '12. however, they are going to have to rebuild their brand and platform in the wake of the destructive wackjobbery that has driven away all non-caucasians and everyone under 35 years old and/or with an IQ over 120, and return to their roots as the fiscally conservative, socially libertarian party of yore. Also, the dems would have to overreach and swing too far to the left for most people's palates--and given the strategic savvy we've seen from Obama in the campaign, that seems unlikely, at least in his first term. I think we're seeing a generational/philosophical shift that echoes JFK in 1960 and Reagan in 1980. Given all that, 13 more days of hitting mute whenever Palin et al pop up on television with their outdated screeds is a small price to pay.
I hope Keith is taking his blood pressure meds, if he needs them. Because he's always livid by the end of these commentaries. I worry for his health. Though honestly, I am still amazed that he hasn't become a desaparecido. I kept expecting Cheney to disappear him.
Apt userpic! Keith really bore into them, and I don't blame him! But as someone said here before, no one is really listening to the mud-slinging ads (and I've seen them even at the local level here on the Space Coast of FL) anymore. That's why folks are flocking to the "early voting" places - they want to vote NOW and get it out of the way so they can go on with Life! (I'll probably join them tomorrow since I've made up my mind on who should be president... and no, as an Independent, I'm not saying 'til after it's all over. :p :) )
I think more people should listen to Keith; now I'm going over to MSNBC and tell him that. (Yes, he has a blog too!)
I just sent the RNC an email about all the nonsense that's been going on lately. I also posted said email to all three of my personal blogs in an attempt to get more people to see it and hear my voice on the matter.
If one never speaks out then nothing will ever change for the better.
Personally I'd rather have the "not real" people like yourself, Tom and so many others that have accepted me than the "real" people any day. I think I'm getting the better deal out of that. ;)

Date: 2008-10-21 10:09 pm (UTC)Sorry, but for a second I read that as "destructive jabberwocky".
Of course, if we assume that these whackjobs come from Wonderland, then things suddenly make a lot of sense....

Then again, I'm "not real" so I don't know that my admiration of your writing skills means all that much. ;-)
