Very sad news. Writer, performer, activist, all-around cool old guy Studs Terkel has passed away at the age of 96. One of the really, really good ones. If all he had ever done was the astonishing Working, a documentation of people's daily working lives, that would be enough to guarantee his immortality. But he did a lot more. And if you've never heard of him, it's about time you did. Rest well, sir.

Narf. Hard Times was one of those books that really made me think.

I think, "The Good War" surpassed "Working." I know it's definitely more well known now.

I'm sorry to hear of his death. I'm actually more surprised to hear he was still alive up to recently though. I guess I thought he'd passed away a few years back. (Kinda like Abe Vigoda)

I remember getting a couple Studs Terkel books for my (at the time) father-in-law as a Christmas present back in the 80's. When I saw the notice that he had died, I had one of those "wait, he was still alive?" moments.

In high school, we did the musical Working. I was cast as the young mexican boy who was trying to get people to stop buying grapes, and sang the song "Un Mejor Dia Vendra".
