Damn. Damn damn damn damn damn.

Odetta, one of the finest singers on the planet, one of the most influential voices in American folk, one of the most passionate, unstoppable human rights activists ever, has passed away at the age of 77.

I don't even know what to say, except: Damn. She has done so much, given so much, and oh will she be missed. Farewell, lady, and thank you.

:(

Miriam Makeba just passed away too. No connection other than they are both on the same Harry Belefonte album that I grew up with.

Yes, they said Miriam Makeba passed away at the end of a song, onstage, as she had wished. She too was a great person and singer. They are also connected in the human rights they stood for, and in our hearts. May their legacy live on.

Peace,
Leslie

Oh nooooooooo. Suddenly 77 seems horribly young somehow. This totally sucks, and I know my mom is gonna be even way more upset than me. *sob*

Hugs,
Jackie

May she rest in peace, and may all who cared for her find comfort in memory.

Her voice was so warm, but it could still give you chills. She will be sorely missed.

Heard about this on NPR this morning. They played an interview with her wherein she sang Amazing Grace a cappella. I broke down into tears.

Rest in peace, sweetheart.

I have loved Odetta since I was young, some 50 years ago. That lady stood on the stage at the now long-gone Lewisohn Stadium in upper Manhattan, and blew us all away with her beautiful, powerful contralto voice. She needed no amplification. I have listened to her recordings over and over again, since then.

We saw her at the Clearwater Revival more recently (but still years ago) and she wowed us once again. She was a wonderful person, and will live on in our hearts.

We love you, Odetta. Rest in Peace.

Sadly,
Leslie

Read about it in [livejournal.com profile] mdlbear's post. Went & dug out a CD of hers & played it this AM.

Caught her live at the Strawberry music Festival back in 2000. I think she broke a microphone that night.

I agree entirely, she will indeed be missed.

I looked over Jordan & what did I see ...

Oh wow! :( My mother knew Odetta actually, as they traveled in similar social circles back in the 50s!

The world is diminished. Odetta's voice has been there all of my life, warming and warning. I wish she'd been able to make it to the inauguration.
