Sadness. Majel Barrett, the widow of Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, has passed away at the age of 76. Ms. Barrett Roddenberry, of course, played Nurse Christine Chapel in the original and animated Star Trek, Lwaxana Troi on Next Gen and DS9, and the ship's computer in the movies (including the upcoming one) and every single Trek series (including some of the video games). Truly, the First Lady of Star Trek.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] ponderoid for the heads-up.

Having meet Eugene Roddenberry (her son) a couple of times, even being on a panel or two with him at a PenguiCon, I feel for his personal loss, in addition to our collective loss.

I really enjoyed it, in the first time Next Generation was playing, that Luxanna Troi was agrueing with the computer to get some directions. Yep, she was having a conversation with herself.

She was the first Number One. Would have been interesting if she would have been able to keep that role from TOS pilot episode.

NOOOO!

I'm so glad I got to meet her, at least.

Snack will be devastated, Majel is the subject of one of her favorite celebrity-at-GenCon stories.

I hope there's an open bar in Heaven, where she and Gene can toast eternity together at last.

RIP Majel. You have to commend her for (a) Nurse Chapel, (b) Lwaxana, and (c) being able to put up with Roddenberry for however long she did.

I'm going home tonight & hug my teddy bear. I met Majel in the dealer's room @I-Con when she was working her table. She commented that he looked like a well-loved bear.

Milady, you will be missed.

I remember the Babylon 5 episode she was in, where she talks about the Centauri emperor...and you can tell that some of the lines she was delivering were just as much about Gene Roddenberry as they were for Emperor Turhan.

Rest in peace, Ms. Barrett, and thank you.

I was going to mention that episode myself. I was mightly impressed that she gave that kind of nod to a show that was, in many ways, a big contender for taking fans away from Star Trek.

She seemed to think that both shows could exist and that's a rare thing in show business.

I've never heard anything bad about her and my heartfelt condolences go out to her family.

A wonderful lady...I feel very lucky to have had the chance to meet her.

So many memories...the time she pulled out her personal contact list and made some calls to help us try to replace a GoH who had to cancel at the last minute...the time she had been autographing for so long that one of the volunteers figured she must be starving and offered her a roll--which she autographed, without missing a beat...and of course, the time our dog got to meet her, (we wouldn't have believed it ourselves if we hadn't seen it, but the dog knew who she was, and went all fandog)...

We may need to lose something to gain something. Star Trek is on the edge of becoming a true American myth.

Losing those we love may be a part of that.

I just got the news via e-mail... I had no idea she was sick (leukemia). I met her once back at Hampshire College where both her son Rod and myself attended - she came to the first 5-Con thanks to him. She was warm and friendly and a great pleasure to talk with, and I feel privledged that I knew her and was a friend to her son, however briefly. Rest in peace Majel. :(
