The cover of the new issue of Mad Magazine.

What are you most looking forward to in the Watchmen movie? And, what are you most worried about them screwing up? I cannot wait for the scene with Matt Frewer as Moloch being confronted by Rorschach. And I sincerely hope they don't screw up the TV interview with Dr. Manhattan, or the scene with him and Laurie on Mars.

I really want to see how they handle Ozymandias' big reveal (not mentioning as it's a spoiler, but if you read it, you KNOW what it is). If they do it right, it'll be one of the great moments in movie history. It they screw it up, the movie will completely collapse.

I am thankful that MAD chose to use Rorschach rather than Dr. Manhattan.

As for the film, I approach it with a good deal of concern. I know it cannot be the graphic novel. I know that there are changes, some of which we will like and some of which we won't. The chance that it will be eye candy but little else is a strong one.

But I still like the casting. I like the viral marketing videos, and the costumes, and I have the feeling that Snyder gets it. I don't know if he has the skill needed to make it work, but he is approaching things with respect.

So I will be there that first weekend. But my overall expectation set will be lower than it was for Iron Man or Dark Knight (which is to say, probably around what I had for Spider-Man 3).

I'm feeling pretty calm about the movie these days.

My biggest fear is that they lose the soul of the piece. They're getting *so much* right from trailers, and pictures, and clips, I just hope the story comes through as clearly.

I don't mind many of the changes they've had to make and even find most of them make sense, or at least have some fair reasoning behind them, and I've even reconciled the big change, although I still have my preference to the book.

This is why I've put down my copy of "Watchmen" and I'm not reading any more until after I see the movie. If I read the source material before watching the adaptation, I spend the whole time worrying about what they'll screw up and nitpicking the stuff they did right and complaining about relatively small stuff.

I want performances that ring true.. if the actors don't believe it, the audience won't either.

I want the right story told. Often when translating comics, the REAL story isn't in dialog, its what happens between the panels and if the screen writer doesn't understand that, you get a superficial story.

I want it to be good, even if they have to vary a little from the original to achieve it.

This is a *big* story to do in only 2-3 hours. I am glad they are removing the Tales of the Black Freighter from the movie itself and doing it as an animated short instead. The trailers have been fantastic so far, I really hope the full movie lives up to them. I think it is possible to do this movie right. I know that the threat at the end will be changed, but I can live with that modifcation (it also lets them remove that subplot from the movie without it effecting the rest of the story. In my mind, it is a good call, you don't have unlimited time and budget).

The movie comes out the same weekend as MarsCon, so it is possible that a bunch of us attending the con will go see it together as a group. I have not gone to a movie with a group of friends in way too many years, I always see them alone or with one other person. So that is also something I can look forwards to.

It's not the movie I'm worried about, it's the audience, i.e. that people will completely miss the point of Rorschach and view him as sympathetic and admirable just because he happens to refer to everyone he doesn't agree with %100 as "liberal".

That would hardly be new. Rorshach's benefited from Misaimed Fandom (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MisaimedFandom) for a long time.

(predicting that Lumpy will respond with some variant of "shut up, you damned furry" in 3, 2, 1...)

I'm still reading the graphic novel for the first time. I'm have my doubts how it will translate into the movie. There are many times where you have a flashback that lasts one panel. Then there's an attempted rape scene. Then there's Rorshach, what an asshole. I'm not sure if they'll do it right considering the time restraints of a movie.

And I hope they don't have the male nudity from Dr.Manhattan.

One of my confederates has confirmed that, yes, they are indeed showing us Das Willy der Ubermensch.

From what I've seen or heard so far, it's going to be a CGI tour de force majeure. I really hope they get the movements of Bubastis down well. And the "birth" of Dr. Manhattan.
