I certainly am not claiming that they're of the same magnitude as sexual orientation, but this is why I am out about, for example, chronic depression, being approximately pagan, and being kinky. I can afford it, I can't be hurt by it, and by my example, maybe someone will think, "Hey, wait a minute, I know someone who..." and refrain from saying or doing something hurtful.

The word is "different". It's been a different definition of the word in various times & places throughout history, but it's always been some form of "different" that is persecuted. Sometimes it was ancestry, sometimes faith, sometimes talents, sometimes some unapproved combination thereof. "It will destroy society, and must be stopped."

I hate the closet, but I hate being jobless (and thus the possibilty of being homeless) much more. I know that I can go for a year, maybe two, if jobless. But to go forwards with what I want to it will cost me my job (I work for a phobic company, transitioning is the same as turning in your notice that you are quitting). The last time I was out of a job it took me almost a full year to find a new one, and that was back when the economy was still good. Now, it would be impossible to find anything, even if my body could tolerate the change (which it may not at this point). I dont need a huge lottery win, just one big enough so I can survive on it without needing to work anymore.

So, yeah, we need all the allies like you we can get. There are more closets out there than people realize, and it hurts to be in them.

Did you catch the Oscar speeches last night? Sean Penn's was widely quoted, and I'm tempted to make a tee shirt saying "Commie Homo Son of a Gun", but Best Original Screenplay winner Dustin Lance Black also kicked nine kinds of butt.
