Okay, having tried to blow up Earth numerous times, now what are some of your favorite alien non-invasion films? Among the ones listed in comments in the previous thread:
  • The Abyss
  • Close Encounters of the Third Kind (my personal favorite, and one of the best damn movies ever)
  • The Day The Earth Stood Still (the original, dammit)
  • Earth Girls Are Easy
ETA: ... and one of the ones I was holding onto for just this moment -- Superman w/Christopher Reeve. :)

Well, it's more like we're invading them after they invaded us after we invaded their planet...but when it comes to aliens...I think Aliens.

And would The Thing From Another World count as an invasion film or not? That's my fave sci-fi film ever.

"Thing" is definitely an invasion, albeit a very small one. And Aliens... yes, that's a masterwork, especially the extended director's cut!

And coming this year is a CGI film (not from Pixar) called Planet 51, about humans landing on a 1950-ish world of aliens. Looks like it could be funny...we'll see.

I wouldn't say a favorite, but I story that was different would be
The Brother From Another Planet (1984), starring Joe Morton.

Um, hello, E.T.- The Extra-Terrestrial? Ok, it feels kinda sappy now almost 30 years later, but it was magic when I was a kid.

And one of my all time favorite movies: CONTACT.

E.T. was the first movie I ever cried at. Great little film. And Contact rocks, despite having Matthew McConaughey (yet another one of those "actors" who I can't figure out why they have a career).

2001: A Space Odyssey comes directly to mind, though its sequels are forgettable, at best.

Earth Girls..., you betcha. Also RHPS, Star Wars [Eps 4 & 5, if you want to be technical], and Galaxy Quest are all on my watch-many-times list.

I would argue that Happy Feet is really an alien "first contact" story in disguise (penguins encounter humans), and thus would fit in your category of alien non-invasion films.

Gonna throw Lilo & Stitch out there. I know it was a disney movie, but still. Aliens aside, the dynamic of Lilo and her sister Nani as they try to cope with the loss of their parents is one of the most real and heartfelt things disney ever did. Plus, Stitch is programmed to "back up sewers, reverse street signs, and steal everyone's left shoe." Awesome!

Also, since we're talking about aliens, how about... um... Alien and Aliens? The first was a truly great horror film, the second, one of the best Sci-Fi Action films ever made.

And I will second [livejournal.com profile] skunktaur's Batteries Not Included. LOVE that movie!

I liked the MST3Ked Space Children starring the guy who played the professor on Gilligan's Island. He played an abusive stepfather which the aliens kill. The paramedics are carrying the body out on a stretcher.
Everyone: Hooray!
Crow: Wait are you sure he's dead?
Mike: Oh yeah.
Everyone: Hooray!
I'm not sure if it counts as an alien movie. The alien is a blob sent from heaven to destroy the world's nukes.

Would the Superman movies count as an alien movie?

Technically, The Day The Earth Stood Still is an invasion story. It's just a small one. Klatuu was there to warn us about their decision to deliver Gort-grade military robots to stomp on anyone who displeased the Galactics.
