Sadness. Detroit Tiger Hall of Fame baseball player and television broadcast legend George Kell has passed away at the age of 86. Hell of a voice, hell of a player, hell of a nice guy.

I remember on WRIF they used to always imitate him. Geaorge Baire would do his "George Swell" voice.

Yep. I was thinking about precisely that this afternoon.

Very sad about this.
I know its been years since George, Al and Ernie were on the airwaves...but I still hear their voices sometimes when watching games. No one else compares. Class acts all around.

Another piece of my child/young adulthood is gone. Sigh.

To be so admired as a ball player and a broadcaster.

Wasn't Kell one of the few major leaguers to hit the cycle withing a game (single, double, triple & home run, but not necessarily in that order)?

I told my mom -- she's a huge Tiger's fan. RIP.

Here is Terry Cashman's Talkin' Tiger Baseball from 1981, where he mentions George Kell as one of the ones to remember.

He must have been the announcer when I was a kid growing up in the sixties and seventies in Toledo...I can still hear his voice. I was a huge baseball fan when one of the current players had my name (Sandy, as in Koufax of course) - but since I was three when he retired, I wasn't real discriminating about it. Sadness. :(

Paraphrasing his own classic words.

"He's LOOOOOONG gone"

Another voice of summer silenced

I delivered parts to his GM dealership in Newport until January.
Half of Newport AR is named after him and he was very well thought-of in the town.
