David Shuster filled in for Teh Keith on Thursday, and had a report on Michelle Obama in London, covering both Oh Horror The Touching Of The Queen and Ms. Obama's visit to a girls' school. The first part, David handles decisively and with only the little amount of snark necessary under such circumstances.

The second part will bring tears to your eyes.

... And what the hell is up with those people who not only take a cheap shot but are obviously either blind or simply scared of a tall, strong black woman, and have called her "ugly"? The fuck!? Never mind that it's insulting, rude, and the lowest point of a failed debate argument -- I think the woman is frickin' gorgeous.

Uhm, WHAT? Someone called Mrs. Obama ugly?? I know tastes differ, but I can't help thinking that's a large amount of sour grapes! She's beautiful!

It's been going on since last year (http://www.google.com/search?q=michelle+obama+ugly&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a). Demented.

They're wearing their "Republican Goggles", which cause anyone with a (D) next to her name to morph into a warty old battleaxe.

Even Elizabeth Kucinich, Stephanie Herseth-Sandlin, Scott Kleeb and Kirsten Gillibrand are physically disgusting in their eyes. Just for disagreeing with the wingnut view of life.

You were right about the tears. I am consistently amazed that little things like how the Obamas connect to people are things I find moving. Perhaps it's just that they are so clearly human and haven't taken a view of needing to hide their humanity to do the job.

I am so glad I can hope again. I think they might just help heal the world.

...you know, the last American president to visit Queen Elizabeth brought his own cook, drilled holes in her house for his security equipment, stressed her flamingos to death, and tore up a rose garden meticulously planted by her dead mother. I realize that's setting the bar awfully low, but I think after that, the Obamas really would have had to work at it to make her upset. (And ask Angela Merkel about inappropriate touching...)

The video they showed of Mrs. Obama at the girls school did bring tears to my eyes. The reaction of the girls to her and the obvious affection she had for them. It was wonderful.

The reaction from the Queen and Prince Philip was also astonishing. Those were not the canned "I'm smiling because I'm the Queen and I have to smile at these people" smile. It sparkled.

That was great. Thanks for sharing. I loved Shuster's #1 item last night, the way comedians skewered various right-wing blowholes during the past week (Letterman re: BillO, Jon Stewart re: Rush, and Colbert re: Glenn Beck).

Calling her "ugly" is ad hominem, it's not just a failed debate, it's a *classically* failed debate. (It will also get you thrown out of anywhere I'm in charge.) And, yes, she's hot... and frankly, I think those fat stick-in-the-mud blowhards are just *jealous* that they'll never have a piece of something that hot.

*chuckles* the last time we had a First Couple that hot? We put a man on the moon... (and, c'mon, he's hot too... hot *and* a geek. What more could you want? Assuming you swung that way... :)

Ugly. Humph. Is that the best they can do. Where the hell is Dick Nixon's Silent Majority when you need it? They need to rise up and clean house over on that side of the aisle. A *loyal* opposition being necessary to the proper running of any country...

Oh, my. Goddess bless her for connecting with those girls and ignoring the secret service guys trying to keep her away from them. Between them, the Obama's might just change the way the world views our country yet. We have not seen the likes of Michelle Obama as a First Lady since Jaqueline Kennedy. She's beautiful, vibrant and REAL, and the people that think she's ugly are either jealous that they can never hope to match her, or morons. Or both.

I think she also connects better to people that Jackie O ever did--Jackie was a bit of an introvert. Michelle Obama seems to have a magic touch--literally. Can you imagine giving the queen an Ipod?? I wonder who is going to have the fun of loading it for her. The Obamass are wonderful, and I am increasing proud of them.

They played part of her speech on Radio 2... She came across as a very savvy woman. Very politically aware too. She'll be good for the Pres and with he pres. I reckon I'm getting old tho' - Barack Obama looks so young!

On the subject of touching the Queen. You are not supposed to touch the Queen unless she touches you first. Michelle Obama did not breach protocol as the Queen did touch her first.
More significant is the Queen ask Michelle Obama to stay it touch. The Queen has been doing politics since we were fighting the second world war so she is very rarely rude to anyone, but there is a major difference between being polite and being friendly. Everyone gets polite from the Queen unless they do something really stupid but publicly asking someone to stay in touch is virtually unheard of.
The First Lady definitely scored better that the President on this visit. Some of POTUS's comments while here were, to me at least, deeply offensive.
