Many congratulations to the incredibly deserving new inductees: Erica Neely and Frank Hayes.

Also, they've got the guest list for next year's FKO:

April 9-11 2010
GOH: Jeff & Maya Bohnhoff
Filk Waif: Erica Neely
Interfilk: Mark Simmons

Congrats to them! I was just wondering yesterday, as I checked the list of previous inductees, how Frank Hayes was not already on the list.

I'm happy to hear about Frank Hayes. The only album I have of his was "Never Set the Cat on Fire" from way back in 1991. I'm sure he has other albums but I haven't found any yet.

I don't have any of Erica Neely's albums because I haven't heard of her before. Does she have a website or samples?

This does sort of link to the filk discography wiwi http://filk.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page I'm working on. The goal is to have a complete list of all filk albums (I'm also holing to expand it to include information about all filk artists). She's not listed.

I got a tape of Frank Hayes's Don't Ask back in 1987 at my very first fannish con (as opposed to a Creation Con). I've been wanting a CD of it ever since, but apparently it was only released on tape. That was my first non-Dr Demento exposure to comedy music. Definately a different branch I never knew existed. And yes, I know not all filk is comedy, but that was my path into it.

Not on CD?

Neither of those is a CD release of the collection I have on tape called "Don't Ask" that I got in 1987. About half of the songs on Don't Ask are not on either of those two CDs, and the performances on Never Set The Cat On Fire are different from the ones on Don't Ask.

That may no longer be possible. I know some filkers want to showcase newer stuff, and some older stuff just can't be worked with to have it sound decent anymore, so the only choice would be rerecording. That's not always possible.

Last con, I got a copy of Leslie Fish & the Dehorn Crew, something about Solar Sailors. I was well aware that the tape was about 20 years old. At about the 10 year mark, she took two different tapes and put them together into something called "Border Patrol". One was the original Solar Sailors; the other, I forget the name of, but I know I had that one too. Of course, I bought Border Patrol, because my originals were either lost or in pretty bad shape.

This new CD? Mostly old songs, some I have never heard before. The tweaks? Damn, I've never heard Leslie sound so good! Some were clearly remixed and remastered; others were completely done over. Some of the tweaks they did-- instrumentation, timing, background stuff? Well, some of the changes did not thrill me. Other stuff? Nicely done!

While rummaging in my storage box, I found several old tapes, some even over 20 years old. I worry about playing them again, even once, but I know I'm going to. If I can convince somebody to move it to a more digital format, so more the better.

Also, if I can find them in my stash, I also did a lot of tape recording in filk rooms over the years. I'd love to get that converted as well. But of course, step #1, I have to find the silly things!

My most recent album, Hello Stranger, is available from CD Baby, where you can also hear clips:

(My first album was produced in England and is harder to get a hold of, unfortunately.)

I know this thread is over a week old and I hope you get email alerts to replies to your posts. I listened to the samples. You're very talented. Congrats on getting into the Filk hall of fame. I bought your CD tonight (my credit card cycles on the 15th) and look forward to enjoying the complete album.

I am surprised to hear that Frank Hayes was not already in the Filk Hall of Fame. I looked at the names in the FHOF, and I am sad to say that I only know Robert Asprin for his Myth Adventures books and never heard his filk. And on my god, I've known Steve Savitzky for years, from back at the start of alt.callahans; I knew he was into filk but I did not know he was in the FHOF!! And Filthy Pierre, I see him every year at Arisia with his lung-powered keyboard (not the little hand-held one that Power Salad uses, a full sized keyboard). Nice to see that, even though I could not get into MassFILK (can't make the meetings or the minimum number of filksings), I still have some connections to the community.

On that same note (pun intended)

On that same note, (pun intended), I've seen more of Peter S. Beagle (The Last Unicorn), Spider Robinson (Callahan's Bar) and Charles deLint (all sorts of "urban fantasy" books) in filking rooms. Take a look at Firebird Arts & Music (http://www.firebirdarts.com/) and Dodeka Records (http://cdbaby.com/group/dodeka) just to get started!

Then there's authors who filk all over the place. Mercedes Lackey. Gordon R. Dickson. C.J. Cherreh

And filkers who write. Leslie Fish has done more than a few short stories.
