Behind The Last Door

A little bit of history has passed away. Marilyn Chambers, who starred in the groundbreaking (and in many ways unintentionally hilarious) erotic film Behind the Green Door, has passed away at the age of 56.

I am not ashamed to admit that at one point I considered her one of the sexiest women in the world. I'm pretty sure I wasn't the only one.

When I was in college, lo these many aeons ago, one of the groups on campus decided to show Ms. Chamber's Insatiable as a fund-raiser. The local DA, trying to make a name for himself in rural Indiana, announced that the film did not reflect community standards and he would seize the film and arrest the students responsible for showing it (while he was ignoring the adult movie theater located two blocks from the county courthouse).

The students pressed on, the film was seized and charges were filed. The student at the center of the case graduated and left town, charges still pending. When the DA came up for reelection, the entire fiasco became a campaign issue and the DA was turned out of office. The new DA promptly dropped all charges.

My first encounter with her was in Cronenberg's "Rabid". I remember her as not being outstandingly beautiful but she had a nature air of sexuality about her.
