Farewell, Robert B. Sherman
Mar. 6th, 2012 01:15 pmAnother great loss. Composer and songwriter Robert B. Sherman has passed away at the age of 86. Our condolences to his friends and family, including his brother and songwriting partner Richard M. Sherman.
A lot of us make fun of the horrific earworm that is "It's A Small World After All"... but we sing along when we're in the ride. And some of the movies he wrote songs for are, if not lost, at least somewhat forgotten. Not too many people break out the soundtracks to The Aristocats or The Happiest Millionaire or even The Magic of Lassie.
But.
Everybody knows "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious". A current ad campaign uses images from The Jungle Book, and "The Bare Necessities" and "I Wanna Be Like You" rise up in memory without too much prodding. We all know "Winnie The Pooh" and "The Wunnerful Thing About Tiggers", and many of us remember how "Heffalumps and Woozles" goes. And we all at least know how to start singing about Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, our fine four-fendered friend.
Rest well, sir, and thanks for the soundtrack of our childhoods.
