A Mighty Wind
Mar. 16th, 2012 09:23 amWell, that was entertaining.
The tornado touched down in northeastern Dexter, MI, about a mile east of where
huskiebear used to live. Ripped through a bunch of homes, destroyed about a dozen. Miraculously, nobody seems to have been seriously injured.
This was only a couple of miles from my sister's family's house. They all went down to the basement. They lost their power, but the house is fine.
The tornado was supposed to continue on to Barton Hills and then Whitmore Lake. Ha ha. Nope, it took a right turn at US-23, and came straight towards my part of town.
I bailed. I mean, I live in a mobile home; staying in it is stupid and dangerous in a storm like this. I went to the Sam's Club, not far away, and hung out there for awhile.
A few things: The Sam's Club staff is very nice. But next time, I'm going up the road to the Meijer. Meijer has shit. The only portable illumination I found in the entire building, in case the power went, was a blister-carded set of palm-sized LED flashlights.
They also had everyone get in the wide open middle, presumably so the first things to batter you around would be the "soft" goods, i.e., clothes and towels. Whenever possible, I was hovering around the "cage" (where they keep the cigarettes).
It got dark outside. The hail and rain on the roof were just nuts. Sam's Club has free WiFi, and a lot of us were using smart-devices or watching online TV. We saw footage from Dexter on Fox 2 news, just about the time the storm was getting over us, with three bright pink blobs bearing down precisely on our position. The tornado warning was extended from 6:30 to 7:15, and we all just kept watch.
Things settled down almost like clockwork at around 7:17. I thanked Sam's Club employees for their hospitality, and got home around 7:30. It was still here.
And how's your morning?
