Save CITY OF HEROES

You may know already that NCSoft is planning to shut down the MMORPG City of Heroes (as well as Paragon Studios, the company that develops it) by the end of the year.

This is not going over well with the large number of people who play it.

CoH is probably the primary reason I don't play MMORPGs. Once, while visiting Tom Trupinski and Lady Cheron and Kitten, I sat enraptured by it for about twenty minutes. It was literally the point at which I realized that, if I got into an MMORPG, especially a really really cool one like CoH, none of you would ever hear from me again. It was that effing glorious.

This is a game, and a community, that deserves to live on.

If you want to join the fight to keep CoH going, join the Facebook group and sign the petition.

I always wanted to do your CD with the CoH engine, but I just don't have those skills.

...I wonder how much CoH costs...

Well, the basic download and online play is free. Dunno how their machinima tools are compared to, say, World of Warcraft, but that's how you'd find out.

I do play CoH and am beside myself about the shut down. There are at least 4 petitions out now [that I've seen and signed] -& several Facebook communities [CoH alumni, Justice for All are the ones I know about].

In addition to that, Steam has a communities section and there are a number of CoH groups there for commiseration. CoX veterans, City of Heroes (unofficial), CoH Virtue, Virtue remnants, the Rogues - CoH, Paragon Hub & Old Justice - are the ones I know about [and have joined under my CoH name ranthalling]

It's not so much that CoH was the best mmo to play [for hours and hours] - but the social aspect of the game has no equal. Maybe I'm just a silly, overly-sentimental girl about this, but this is hitting me hard.

Actually, Paragon Studios has already shut down. On the Friday before Labor Day, they were abruptly told that they had no jobs. This is why I won't give NCSoft any more of my money; they deserved better than that.

Perhaps better if the community were allowed to *take over* the game? A community consortium that could put up some servers to host and take over the codebase? After all, we have Dreamwidth...
