I'm not sure what it is, but I know what it's not. And that's the Rapunzel-centric film Disney initially announced, before they decided not to make any films for any audience but 12 year old boys. I don't know if this will be good or not, but it doesn't do much for me now.

Well, they've pretty much flooded the "pretty pink princess" market to the point of waterlogged over-saturation, so it's only natural that they turn their attention to the other half. And speaking as someone who was once in that 12 year old boy demographic, I don't see a problem with that.

Yeah, 'cause boys are just so underrepresented and ignored by Disney. I mean, of the last 21 animated Disney films (The Little Mermaid through The Princess and the Frog), only 14 or 15 had a male main character. That leaves, like, one third with a girl as the lead!

Bingo. [livejournal.com profile] reannon did a great rant on the changes a while ago that summed up my feelings (even as a former 12-year-old boy).

It looks like a cross between Shrek and Enchanted, to be honest...not that there's anything wrong with that.

Meh. Rapunzel is one of my very favorite fairy tales, and this does not look like a rendition I'm going to particularly like. Sigh!

I'm worried this might be one of those cases where the trailer is more fun than the movie. The hair gags were funny, but I can't see them making a whole movie out of it.

I noticed that Disney didn't get it its own domain name.

That bit with the chameleon tongue in the ear? My dogs used to do that up the nose...mini dachshunds are like neti pots on four little legs, except neti pots don't have to eat or go potty. But at least you can breathe pretty good afterwards.

Lessee. Spunky heroine. Hapless and not entirely trustworthy hero. Annoying animal sidekick. Complete ignoring of the original story.

Yep. Disney all over.

is wondering when they'll get that simply going anti-stereotype isn't any better than the stereotypes themselves

I did what I always do when the trailer leaves me uncertain. I checked the previous credits of the directors and writers. Both of the directors were involved in Bolt, one as co-director, and one wrote the screenplay for Meet the Robinsons. Both were movies I liked, so that's hopeful.

I took one look at that smug, smirking Princeley boy and wanted to take my own crack at his noggin.

And you KNOW Rapunzel will display the required 5 seconds of lip-service to feminism - i.e., she'll be just "spunky" enough to talk back once or twice - and then at the end she'll marry the handsome dickwad anyway. Like every other goddamn Disney film.

The animation does look creepy. Apparently Pixar didn't help them do this at all. And (keeping in mind that I work at Shrek 4-D and have some prejudice) this was picking up on the "mocking fairy tales" just as the last Shrek movie has been released. And Disney did this whole fairly tale mockery thing in animated/live action as Enchanted. With decent music, too.

But those CGI faces? Did Disney hire the people who do those creepy Barbie movies?

If my hair could do that I would never have cut it. That said, I will probably enjoy this movie the same way I enjoy most Disney offerings - with my inner 9-year-old at the fore. This is better than most, in that my inner 12-year-old seems to get to join the party. But still, fairly standard Disney.
