I've actually got two excuses. The first is up-to-the-second tech on Rock Band. I want it; I want to convert songs to it. To do so, I need to get a dang console. Preferably an XBox, which seems to be the tool of choice for the developers' network.

The other is the forthcoming Marvel vs. Capcom 3:

[profile] unclelumpy linked up last week to the new trailer for Fallout: New Vegas (here's a different, more dramatic trailer), which looks just as fantastic. But that's at least a PC game.

And the past couple of days have been devoured by Jump O'Clock for the iPhone/iPod. It's basically Doodle Jump, but steampunk -- adorable.

Any upcoming games, on any platform, we should know about?

Although they're claiming the "best version" will be on the PS3 (w/Steamnation integration - Steam is Valve's software distribution platform), Portal 2 will still be out for the 360 and I'll be getting it on day of release (there will also be a PC release) :)

I think I'm going to have to buy a Wii in order to play Epic Mickey (http://www.thekoalition.com/epic-mickey-e3-2010-trailer-and-screens/), because it looks like well-referenced Disney steampunk awesome.

I would argue that a PS3 has a blu-ray player which is a noticeable improvement over regular DVD.

But my PS3 gets used mostly as a disc player and a media server (so I can watch shows I've downloaded on my TV).

If X360 had a Blu-Ray player I would have gone that route. I know the PS3 can play a disc with avi files on it. Can X360 do the same?

Dunno. The Blu-Ray is a huge point in PS3's favor, but the available games, and the XBox-specific RB dev tools (not to mention the brand-new upgraded version) lean me toward the XBox. I can't get either of them for awhile anyway, likely not till Black Friday. On the other hand, that gives me lots of time to think about it.

I hear ya. If I was a serious console gamer I would consider X360 too and a separate blu-ray player (which is coming down in price). Sometimes I sort of wish I went that route. I'm not a big console gamer (I prefer PC) but X360 is Windows and the media server works best with that.

See ya this weekend!

Just saw the video. I have to admire Deadpool's control. If I just got surprised butt-raped by sharp spikes, I'd be saying more colorful words than, "Gahhh!"

...Eh. I never did get computer games, in either sense of that term. What I remember from high school from the "gifted" program was the one big green-screened computer in the room (late 70s) being hogged by three boys all the time while we girls only stood and looked at it.

I'm just grateful that the gender bias in game marketing and creation have allowed women to pull ahead of men in college 'cause the boys are spending the weekends and nights drooling in front of a screen and the women are studying.

Considering that a college degree is currently a losing proposition (and will likely be so until well after the education bubble bursts), the boys staying home playing video games will end up ahead of them financially.

It's gotten so obvious that the NY Times has even noticed.

Ah, and lest someone...sigh...accuse me of making crap up, let me link to a law blog with a half-dozen links describing the situation just for law school graduates.

http://balkin.blogspot.com/2010/06/wake-up-fellow-law-professors-to.html

The break-even point for earned salary minus education costs for an electrician versus a chemical engineer (the highest paid engineer) was age 46 in 2008. It's now 49.

Nationally, the percentage drop-out rate for four-year public colleges was 50% for students enrolling during the years 2005-2006. Of students who did graduate with undergraduate degrees in May of 2009, less than 1/6 held jobs in their field of study six months later.

The average amount of money owed by the above (mostly unemployed) graduates was $25,000.

The current college education system is a con-game. Get away while you can.

The boys staying home playing video games will do better than women with Ph.Ds anyway thanks to pay disparities in the sexes that continue to this day. Even 20 years ago, the average income for male high-school dropouts was higher than the average income for women with degrees.

But since women with degrees have better average incomes than women dropouts, I'll err on the side of education.

You're going by previous data which is no longer true in the present economy--especially in cases where the women involved are studying "obsolete subjects" like gender studies, law, or business.

At present, the women who drop out have no jobs. The women who go to college face four years of humiliation, binge drinking, walks of shame and afterwards, no jobs, either, except that in their case, they owe $25,000.

Last time I checked $0/per month is better than -$1000/month.
