• I'll have a new song at The FuMP tomorrow. Well, an old song, with a new studio arrangement. Might have something to do with obsession. And mad science. And very fast birds.
• Tomorrow is Duckon in Naperville, IL, and as usual janmagic has a loaded filk track. My own concert is Sunday at 2:00, but that's like the last bite of cake -- Friday night Dandelion Wine is having an album release party, and Wild Mercy and Toyboat will be there, and Lady Mondegreen, and Scott Snyder, and Riverfolk, and Mark Bernstein, and Art & Cynthia Warneke, and Judith & Dave Hayman, and just a gang of folks, and especially best of all Filk GOH Talis Kimberley.
• My old gaming buddy Chuck is part of an unusual and rather fun project, an "energy news comedy" site called The Joule.
• I'm trying to finish up a couple more things before I head off to Duck, but I suspect it ain't gonna work. On the other hand, that means I should have more downloadable live shows ready sometime Monday.

Each week these two artists- two of the most popular artists on The Dr. Demento Show- get together and talk about the two most recent songs on The FuMP, or The Funny Music Project. Whenever possible they will have other FuMP artists on to talk about the songs that were posted. And this happens live every Thursday night on Dementia Radio (http://www.dementiaradio.org) so you can tune in live, chat, and hear it all as it unfolds.

Luke & Carrie's Bad Rapport: Episode #017 – U Pick Luke’s FuMP!

There are two main components of this fortnight’s episode. The first is our report on the epic awesomeness of w00tstock Chicago, which also inspired our song picks for this week. We got tracks by Paul & Storm, Wil Wheaton & MC Frontalot, a song about Adam Savage’s show “Mythbusters” by Devo Spice, and songs by Molly Lewis and Tim Cavanaugh.

The second main component is “U Pick Luke’s FuMP”, in which Luke describes 10 abandoned song ideas of his from the past 15 years, and if you like one or more of them, you can leave a comment on this episode at our website and tell us which one(s) it is, and if any particular song(s) gets a lot of support from the you, the Luke Ski super-fans, he will consider making them and posting them at the FuMP dot com.

The show also has News of the Stupid, an in depth explanation of the final scene from our puppet video episode, and tales of robots who try to teach Luke how to be a safe driver by talking to him like he’s a kindergartner. For realsies.

Thanks for the DucKon plugs, Tom! (FYI, Jan's link isn't working.) The filk track is loaded. Jan did a great job this year. I'll be spending most of my time in the rooms and only attend a few panels. That's OK. The panels deserve a break from me occasionally. I'll have to do my dealers room shopping early though.

Turns out that my uncle died early Wednesday morning, so I'll be giving the eulogy at his memorial service on Saturday and having to miss both the panels and my reading. I will be around Friday, Sunday, and late Saturday night, though, so I'll be able to get some visits in with folks.

Timing is everything.

Thank you, Tom.

It was a good death, on his terms, for a great musician and wonderful human being. He played trumpet for big- and medium-sized orks both before WW2 (starting at age fourteen in '38) and clear up into the late-1950s with touring bands that hit resorts.

He, much more than my father, gave me the courage to be different from those around me and the heart to love people, without judging whether or not they deserve it.

If anyone is a fan of the Civilization game series, I found out last night the fifth one is in production and due for release on September 21st. (Yes, the 5th one rebuilt from the ground up according to their podcast.) They're also switching from squares to hexes. Not sure how that will work on the keypad.

Four was so good, in my opinion, that I wonder if they're not going to be trying too hard.

Sid's great nine out of ten times, so I trust his judgment, but I'm curious as to what route they're going to go and what they can include to make it more interesting.

I'm not sure how much Sid is involved in this one. Could be 10% could be 90%, I don't know. Now for the changes combat is getting some rewriting. Cities can defend themselves. They have a defensive value and when it's down to 0, you take the city. So no more building units just to defend your empire. Military is for attacking. Also there's 1 military unit per hex. Since hexes are so big it doesn't make much sense, but there's a higher value placed on tactics so adjacent units will be a factor.

That last part is my own speculation, but they'd better do something like that. I hate 15 enemy units on the same square and having to wear them down one at a time, but that's going too far in the other direction. But there are more people per unit this time. (Civ 4 had 3 in some cases. The screenshot I saw reminded me of medieval tactical war games played on sheets of green felt.)

I also understand the tech tree will be different in that you can pick your path. Also you can't sell techs, you can co-research with another nation though.

There will also be neutral city states you can trade with or conquer. They're not enemy nations (they know they can't win vs the big boys) and they don't expand.

Roads will also be different, but I'm not sure how.

It always always bugged me that we never heard any of the Hong Kong Cavaliers' songs, except that broken part of one that falls apart because Penny's crying in the audience. So I took what there was of that, wrote lyrics, added more music, and recorded it. I have a new song hitting the FuMP Sideshow on Monday. It's a song I premiered during my set at Penguicon the sunday of the convention, and it's the next single from my upcoming CD "The Last Arcade", which should be out by the first week in July.

Two songs from "The Last Arcade" have been trading places on the Mad Music Dementia Top 20. Last week, my most recent song, "Marry'd Lyfe" (which I premiered also at Penguicon, during the FuMP-For-All) was number 1 for the second week in a row, with my other single, "DiG DuG" at number 2. This week, "Marry'd Lyfe" was #2, and "DiG DuG" hit a record 10th week at #1 (obviously, non-consecutive).
