Steven Moffat is an utter bastard.

Not only does he give us a hang by your fingernails cliffhanger, he doesn't give us a preview of the next episode!

s05e12 - The Pandorica Opens

Some quick thoughts:

It was pretty clear that there were only ever two candidates for who or what was in the Pandorica, and early on we could eliminate the Master. Though he could easily be behind all of this. ETA: The more I consider the fact that I didn't see him there, the more I think that's likely. Too much of this season has seemed to be wrong, incomplete, or out of character for all of it to have been real, and the Master's MO accords with that kind of mental games.

I didn't get the directionality of the transfer of the contents correct, but I like Moffat more for that.

Under the "earliest writing in the universe" ("Hello Sweetie!") are coordinates. I didn't get them all, but the first two are Theta Sigma, which in Who canon was his nickname at uni. Big points for the River = Rani theory, or a red herring placed by the OTHER possible Big Bad behind all this (i.e., the Doctor's other school buddy, the Master)? (It could be both.)

I have a lot of questions at this point about just how much of this season was real, how much was hallucination/illusion, and how much was alternate universes coming together. I look forward to seeing Moffat get the rabbit back into the hat -- without lowering Zeus on a rope to make it happen. I think, and hope, that he's up to the challenge.

So... what of that very interesting line that River tosses out?

"Why did I ever let you OUT?"

Must go back and rewatch; M thinks she remembers that line as in the present tense, which changes the meaning substantially.

Yeah, I figured we'd be having someone come back from the dead, but I never figured it would be in QUITE that way. And ONCE, just to be different, I wish the season-ender would not be some universe-ending event that the Doctor has to stop (or cause, as the case may be). Moffat continues to be the king of one-liners though! :-)

I'm utterly pulled in, fascinated, and mystified. I wish I had a TARDIS to go to Next Saturday.

I want to know who the frak the Voice belongs to...

And I caught onto "Autons" about a fraction of a second early...and was amazed with it. :-)

In short, I have no real clue (except for that bit in Time of Angels where we are surmising the Doctor has traveled back on his own timeline), but really, even then I'm not sure...and cannot wait to see what Moffat does to pull us back from this.

Thank *deity* that this happens next Saturday, as opposed to the Saturday after, where I'd have little time to watch the ep...until it was shown Sunday in the Who room. ;-)

I don't know who The Voice is, but I do know that we heard "Silence will fall" in the very first episode of the season, from Prisoner Zero.

The voice...is most likely the Valeyard. Go back and listen to the voice of the "Dream Lord" in Amy's Choice very very carefully when he gets angry with The Doctor.

It's hard for me to explain but it's almost certainly the same actor at the very least. (I spent some time voice chasing in anime for years until I started watching subbed shows instead of dubbed ones.)

All I can say is HUH? How did the tardis exploding way back when make the crack in Amys wall and does this mean nothing has actually real? I wonder what we will find out next week.

I wonder how they kept the filming of the extra material, like Liz Ten,
Churchill and other early stuff quiet? It had to be recorded when their
episodes where recorded. So someone(s) did a good job of keeping
secrets. And how it was ordered up to be recorded. Was the whole season pretty much written before any recording started?

Yes, before the season started, Moffat had written his six of the 13 scripts and was script editing the rest of the submissions (one of the reasons, perhaps, that Neil Gaiman's script was pushed to next season), which gave Moffat time to write the new modern day Sherlock series that's coming soon to the BBC.

1 - This episode caught my attention, right out of the gate.

2 - There were several genuine surprises that I didn't figure out ahead of time (or, in a couple of cases, picked up on just moments before they were revealed).

3 - As much as I enjoyed RTD-era Doctor Who, the two-parters generally were somewhat disappointing (especially the finales). The first half always seemed to really promising, but the second half (although entertaining) was usually a bit of a let down. I'm really anxious to see how this part 2 plays out.

Oh, and I remember seeing a TARDIS outside of Stonehenge on one of my trips there... was it 1993 or 2003? Can't remember now. (Seriously. I overheard a tour guide point out the blue police box there as being a TARDIS).

Well, that was worth staying up until 2 AM to see. One of the joke spoiler macros I saw (posted 3 days before the episode aired) turned out to be real spoiler. We know that River survives since we have seen her later in her personal timeline (in Silence in the Library, where the Doctor meets River for his first time and her last time).

Edit: hit enter too soon. Also the fate of Amy Pond is definately something I hope gets fixed. I knew without any spoilers that this would be a two-parter, no way this arc could be resolved in just one hour. Finally, I so want to know how River can pilot a TARDIS if she is not a Time Lord. None of the other companions have been able to do so without the Doctor also being there (or at least setting it up for them, and the companion just had to hit the "GO!" button/lever).

There are several possibilities about River piloting a TARDIS. The one that would be easiest has her being The Rani, a Time Lady, an old school chum, and persistent enemy of the Doctor. She had a TARDIS of her own, so would know how to pilot it.

Another has her married to the Doctor at some point (she knows his real name). It's likely she would travel with him and learn piloting then.

There are probably about fifty other ways she could know how to pilot the TARDIS, but those are the easiest to work with, I think.

One small problem with River not being a Time Lord idea: they already established in the current continuity that only a Time Lord can dematerialize and navigate a TARDIS (or at least, a Time Lord has to be present inside the TARDIS for a companion to be able to do so). Donna could not pilot it solo until she absorbed part of the Doctor. The one thing I have against River being the Rani is that the Doctor saw her die, and there was no regeneration (do Time Lord bodies still disintergrate when they die after they run out of regenerations?)

I don't think Time Lords disintegrate after death in current continuity; if they did, there would have been no cremation for The Master when he died (and no ring to be picked up etc.)

I'm not convinced about the concept of a non-Time Lord not being a TARDIS pilot absent the Time Lord; it may have been the actual companions, rather than their race. River Song is far more knowledgeable about the TARDIS than any of Nine or Ten's companions ever were.

Either way, River clearly knows what she's doing at the controls, regardless of whether there are overrides that apply to her generally or specifically.

So, did Rory stick around for 2K years because he wanted to, or because Amy's idealized version of Rory would have wanted to?
