Considering all the Mormon dogma that's imbedded in Twilight (http://stoney321.livejournal.com/317176.html), this is ever so amusing.

Yes. Stephanie Meyer has a right to write the books that she wants, her publishers have a right to publish them, her readers have a right to read them, and I have a right to state my opinions, namely that Stephanie Meyer is a talentless hack stapling abusive relationships to an already-worn-out trope, her publishers are willing to publish any poorly-written tripe as long as it makes a buck, regardless of what kind of messages it sends, and her readers make it hard to decide whether their taste in literature or their sense of women's worth is more lacking.

I think the world would be a better place if those books had never existed, but I think it would be a worse place if anyone with metastasized offense gland was able to dictate what the rest of us can and can't read.

But for the vamps? Nah. Dracula, Lestat, Orlock and Miriam Blaylock are holding their collective heads and groaning over this abomination.

Just *once* I would like to see a Christian group get up in arms about the vampires for a legitimate religious reason. Like the fact that the whole vampire myth is a bastardization of the Holy Sacrament. Drink of my blood and live forever - anyone? Anyone?

It would be amusing. Not that there is a legitimate religious reason for censorship.

I wouldn't mind seeing some Pagans protest christianity because Jesus is too close to the Sumerian goddess Innana, the Greek demigod Heracules, the Babylonian demigod Gilgamesh, etc.

To show the world that they are still relevant, the Christian Coalition calls for a ban on Twilight books. Given their success with suppressing the Harry Potter series they should have held their announcement media event at the new "Wizarding World" theme park to demonstrate that they are a force to be reckoned with.

I am somewhat sympathetic. Idolizing vampires is a sick thing to do, and that the Twilight series is popular does not speak well for us.

However, I oppose banning books, regardless.

the only thing we need to ban is banning itself

Ridicule the books for bad writing if you want, or argue that they have a bad message, but don't call for them to be banned. Banning books is wrong. It offends me when anyone says a book should be banned. In a way it disturbs me more when y'all do it, because I expect y'all to know better, unlike the religious right.

(Note, I have not read a word of Meyer's work, and I'm not planning on it. I'm not defending Meyer; I'm defending my right to read stuff that someone else out there doesn't like.)
From: [identity profile] filkertom.livejournal.com
I'm pretty sure most of us here are more of the mind of "[eyeroll] Sh-yeah, right, why don't we ban books for being not good?" in a satirical way. As was pointed out upthread, Stephanie Meyer has the right to write and publish whatever the heck she wants. Wish she was more competent at the writing part.

The Christian Coalition is noted for [a] having made much political hay out of "defending the nation's morals" or somesuch, [b] calling for this or that to be banned because of this or that's perceived threat to those selfsame national morals, [c] generally being angry and frightened by anything and everything, and [d] getting similarly angry/frightened people to give them money. In short, they're assholes who prey on peoples' fears of the unknown -- including that of the afterlife -- and God knows we've got plenty of them.

Thank you, Christian Coalition!

Hermione Granger was a wise young witch -- forbid it and they flock.

So there will soon be gaggles of li'l fundie girls out there having good fun with their first act of disobedient defiance by sneaking off to have Twilight reading or watching parties with their friends -- where the crappy text is secondary to the fun and adventure of the defiant act itself. (Submission, abstinence, suppression -- all old hat to girls who've been fed misogynist fundie propaganda from the cradle. This stuff at least has a STORY and a hot guy.)

And you just know some of the girls will show up with this old book they borrowed by this Bram Stoker dude, or this creepy old black and white movie starring some old guy whose name sounds like an Italian dish -- Bela Lasagna or something -- and a number of those girls will toss aside the Twilight books for something tastier, with braver and stronger girls in it.

(And one girl will have to hide her Jesus-the-Vampire-Slayer fanfic from everybody...)
