Marmaduke. Garfield. Alvin and the Chipmunks. Now Yogi! And let's not forget next year, it's the g-d effin' SMURFS!

I weep for my plundered childhood.

Lock and Load everyone! It's time for a Smurfin' Safari!

[bangs head repeatedly on keyboard]. You'd think after Garfield, Alvin, Marmaduke, etc. etc, you'd think theyd get the message. I mean, if theyre gonna make a film from comic/ cartoon, why not Lio?

My significant other works for Rhythm & Hues animation studio and had to live through Chipmunks and Marmaduke this year. He just sighed. Oh well, WB probably won't outsource this will they?

So, can we just pretend there's a rumour that Russell Brand is going to be Captain Jack's even more disreputable brother in Pirates V?

With Dan Aykroyd as Yogi and Justin Timberlake as Boo Boo, no less!

They got the voices sounding more or less right, I'd say....
WHEN will they give us Red Hot Riding Hood in 3D?!!?
No, next will be Huckleberry Hound, Pixie, Dixie and Mr Jinks.

Perhaps a splatter movie as Jinksy literally hates those meeces to pieces?

Actually, my vote is for Sylvester and Tweety...as long as they include the old lady. They just can't do it without her.

Why am I hearing Stallone as Sylvester? Helen Mirren would be good as the old lady.

I know, just that Timberlake never struck me as a voice actor...

More surprising that he's got the BooBoo voice down proper, while Yogi is kinda lacking.

OK, I'm not the target audience, as I wasn't that big a Yogi fan even as a kid, so I don't plan to see it. That said, I found the trailer a lot less annoying than I did Garfield, Marmaduke, the Chipmunks, or the Smurfs.

As [livejournal.com profile] r_caton noted, the voices are fairly good. (Though there was one point where I thought Ackroyd strayed into a Rodney Dangerfield impression.) And Zach Levy is a likable lead.

But the big thing was that it all had a fairly old-fashioned feel to it. There was no attempt to make it "hip" or "modern". It was just old Yogi, stealing pick-a-nick baskets and doing slapstick. The gag with the train and the fence looked like something I might have seen on the original cartoon.

I don't expect it to be good, but it just might rise to the level of OK family entertainment, the kind of thing you can take little kids to without wanting to put yourself out of your misery.

Now, if they're going to do a cartoon like this in movie format, why not use the Treasure Hunters or Wacky Races (although The Great Race was already pretty 'Wacky').

I want Dick Dastardly, dangit.

I saw this on TV. I think Boo Boo would have said it best: "The fans aren't going to like this, Yogi."

And since someone mentioned the Smurfs movie, I read in Comic Shop News a few weeks ago that someone is going to be re-releasing some of the old Smurfs graphic novels. The first one to be released is titled (and I swear to Persephone I'm not making this up) "The Purple Smurf."

Well, considering that 90% of filmgoers' anticipation of films consists of "Dude, this is gonna look so awesome!" and "Did you see how much they spent on the SFX?" -- I'd say this lands YB snugly in among the Transformers and Iron Man films.
