Hmm. I am not terribly interested by this preview - Miles has just escaped a kidnapping attempt, is drugged to the gills, but it's not gripping, there's no sense of urgency. The kid character doesn't help matters - he seems a bit cloying-cutesy and not engaging.
There's also the fact that the opening scene - Miles, struggling through a field of cryo-tanks - reminded me of Dan Abnett's fantastic Eisenhorn series, which opens in a similar fashion, but was a lot more tense from the very beginning. This isn't Bujold's fault, it's just my own external experience being brought to the table, but it's still jarring.
All this said, I am actually pretty excited for the book. Seeing Memory's first five chapters like this would probably have had me in a similar state of dislike, but it's my favorite Vorkosigan book bar none. I find the books start to get going about a third of the way in, anyway, so I'll withhold my judgment (and possible further crankiness) until the book itself is released.
When I re-read Memory I usually skip to the ice-water incident and begin from there. It's a very good book, but the first few chapters are just too painful for me to read again.
::nod:: I know exactly what you mean. (I usually skip down to Miles getting brevet-Auditor'd, and go from there. Seeing him lose the Dendarii and ImpSec hurts.)
I almost couldn't read it the first time. If I hadn't had a lot of previous experience with Lois and Miles that reassured me this would be a good book, I don't know that I would have pressed on.
On the other hand, I found it quite believable, so it set up the rest of the book very well. And the part where Miles picks himself up (or is picked up, depending on your point of view) and starts getting on with piecing his life back together...sometimes when I'm feeling down I think about that part.
I confess I have done this and nobody is allowed to disturb me at home until I'm done. Yes, I'm going to buy the hardback too but it's in a good cause.
Love the Miles books, but it's been wayyy too long since I've read any of them. I'd have to backtrack and get reacquainted...and that's not going to happen until late October at the earliest.
Having less reading time than I used to sucks. :-(
