I knew it was a good idea as soon as I heard that Newt was opposed.

I love this. This man is so right.

I think you know this...but...not all people who identify themselves as Christian (I do) are hateful, stupid bigots. Some of us try to read and internalize and THINK ABOUT what the Bible says. It is emphasized, at least at the church I go to, that you read, think, study...learn scripture in CONTEXT...and call out bigotry, racism, and hatred at any time you see it...and you make damned sure you aren't contributing to it. That said, one thing that I've seen emphasized time and again is that, as Christians, we'll eff up mightily every day. The next step though is to look at it, learn from it, and do better the next day. That's at least some of what I've learned in the last year or so of trying this "church thing."

Yup. You guys get a bad rep from a very vocal minority. It sucks.

While I wondered a bit about pundits earlier, here, Keith is 100% correct.

My species can be so disappointing.

I usually catch Keith on the audio podcast, and I cannot agree with him more.

The most disgusting comment I have seen on this issue is an army vet who agrees with Newt et al. He keeps touting on how he fought for our country to keep our rights safe...apparently that was for those who have been here several generations and were only slightly brown.

I like how he kept saying over and over that it's a community center. After I watched Rachel (with guest host Chris -- again!) I turned over to FOX news just for shits and giggles. Palin was there, talking about the "mosque" at groud zero, and, even though she knew it wasn't at ground zero, kept talking about how it was going to be 13 stories high and stuff. Exactly the mis-information that Keith was talking about.

he put the whole thing in perspective. i really wish i could strap a whole lot of people into chairs and force them to watch it. not that it would do any good, i guess. true believers are unswayed by facts and reason. but, sometimes ya gotta try.

I hear this and I am further stunned at the ignorance and bigotry by conservatives against this project. I post on the Chicago Sun Times and I am amazed by the idiocy at what many people say. I'm one of the few people defending the notion of Freedom of Religion. Keith only makes it worse by revealing how stupid those people are.

I just want to grab people and shake them and yell IT'S NOT A MOSQUE. A lot.

Except then that sounds like I'd be agreeing that it shouldn't be permitted if it were a mosque.

Why are people such idiots. WHY.

Tom, whatever you may think, here's a response from a Muslim that you might want to read. I merely offer it as counterpoint (http://www.aifdemocracy.org/news.php?id=6131).

I have to disagree with him because
1) America still needs lectures about freedom of religion. Not just the right for people to practice as they see fit but the right NOT to have some other religion get preferred treatment or (conversely) worse treatment by the government. Does AFID know how the AFA wants to keep any future mosques from being built in the US period?

2) In America you have the right to offend provided you are not breaking the law. Sometimes you have to say "tough shit" and if the Ground Zero strip club isn't offensive than a community center that can't even be seen from the "holy site" shouldn't be either.

3) The amount of lies spread about Park 51 means that to NOT build it would be giving in to the fear and hatred conservatives are looking for to gain power. These are people looking for attention. The best thing to do is not give them what they want.

Regarding point three:

It seems to me there's a word for people who use fear and intimidation to get their way.

Think for a bit, folks. It'll come to you.

Eloquent and well spoken, as Keith's special comments usually are. I think there are a lot of people who are taking the whole "controvesy" too far.

The Iraq war, late-term abortion, Prop 8, Shirley Sherrod, the community center. Once again the right proves that if the facts don't support them, they simply make shit up and keep repeating it until their sheep bleat it back to them. Their stupid, stupid, well-armed, religion-poisoned, dangerous sheep.
