Michigan. Ohio. Pennsylvania. New York. Massachusetts. Connecticut.

(Sounds like the cast for a mid-80s Saturday morning cartoon.)

On trips for which I allot multiple driving days, I have a bad habit of starting later than I'd like. Part of this is my current Old Fat Guy physical limitation, and part of it is simple Whoops-I-Gotta Syndrome. And one thing to do became another thing to do became fighting with my damn internet connection (thank you so much, AT&T, no really, thank you so very fucking much) became two errands after I was out the door became just after 11:00 a.m. when I finally, officially began the trip for Pi-Con in Enfield, CT.

While it grew warm and humid eventually, it was neither so warm nor so humid as the worst days of this summer, and I started out on the Ohio Turnpike which is always a good thing. Well, actually, of course, I started out on the US-23, and Da Bear got his first countdown at the Michigan-Ohio state line. You know. "10... 9... 8... 7... 6... 5... 4... 3... 2... 1... OHIO!"

If you don't have children, try this. It is amazing how simple stuff like this makes a trip more fun. We also get excited when, while headed for Columbus, we start seeing the signs for the Olentangy Indian Caverns. You should see us at the gates of Dizzy Whirl.

Anyway. On to the Ohio Turnpike, a very fine road indeed. Unfortunately, part of the reason it's a very fine road is it is regularly maintained, and Hello Road Crew. Ah well. I can deal.

I had to deal a lot. Basically, every major road I traveled on yesterday was under construction. Finefinefine. That's why I have my iPod and Gatorade.

Instead of heading for Philly and parts southeast, this trip took me through Cleveland, up to Buffalo, and then over. The New York Thruway is a very good drive, I'll give you that one. Road's in great shape, the views are wonderful. But apparently bladders and gas tanks work differently in the Empire State, 'cause exits and service plazas are as rare as hen's teeth, and every once in awhile they mention oh yeah, the next service plaza doesn't have gas, hope you can go 75 miles.

Guys? This is no way to run an airline.

Yes, I know it's a road. Shut up.

Anyway. 8:30-ish, Canastota, NY, I saw a sign for a Super 8. As directed to by the signs, I asked the toll booth lady how to get there. She said left at the light, left at the third light, go six miles. Right near a Dunkin Donuts.

Interesting concept of "convenient to the freeway" ya got here.

It was actually left at the fourth light. I didn't find this out till later.

After running around like a crazy person for about twenty minutes, I made my way back to the exit area. Interesting landmark: Graziano's World Famous Restaurant and Inn. And a McDonald's. And a Days Inn. Right near a Dunkin Donuts.

Aha! Mickey D's has bathroom and WiFi. I used the Maps program on the iPod (surprisingly much easier and to the point than the iPod/iPhone version of Google Earth), nailed the Super 8, got the number. They were full up.

Called the Days Inn. Nobody answered.

I didn't try Graziano's. The parking lot was full, and they proudly boast "31 rooms!" And any place touting itself as "world famous", especially with its own built-in attraction (oooh! Boxing photos), isn't a cheap night's sleep.

While I was sorting all this out, Anne called. She was going to bed. I said good night, I'd give her a call in the morning, and got back on the road looking for a decent, cheap motel.

Half-hour between service plazas, not many exits. By the time I got to a potential crash zone, I was caffeinated and wide awake.

And I said to myself, "Self," I said, "let's see how far we can go. Every mile is a mile I don't have to drive in the morning."

More construction, some light rain, and the scariest fog I have ever driven through. Literally couldn't see thirty feet past the car. Thank goodness there was not a lot of traffic, 'cause I dropped it down to 20 mph and carefully crept forward until the road rose above the fog.

Long story short... I'm here. Thirteen hours on the road (and another hour and a half in the aforementioned judicious rest breaks). At 1:30 this morning, I got all the way through to the Holiday Inn in Enfield, CT, which was a Crowne Plaza until literally yesterday, they just finished up the conversion. One of the con people, the extra-helpful Jeff, got me checked in and schlepped stuff to my room, which is large enough to hold an RC-car rally. (I'd say "slot cars", but anybody under the age of 40 would blink in confusion at me.)

And there's an Uno Chicago Grill a few miles back up the freeway, so A Little Bear's Gonna Get Pizza. Which, as you all know, is a stuffed bear's secret power source. If the pizza should ever stop blinking... no, wait, that's Ultra Man.

Anyway. I'm gonna go back to sleep in a bit.

And my Bear will be cuddled beside me, glowing with the knowledge that, thanks to one long, glorious driving day, he is a Six-State Bear.

Full, but good. Saturday I head out to Clawson for a ConFusion committee meeting. Sunday, rendezvous with Allen and family at my mother's place in Southfield, go out to eat, then everyone but my mother will head over to the Detroit Zoo for the day. Sunday evening, rehearsal.

Yikes! Well, if nothing else, you're making me feel good about [livejournal.com profile] ultimatepsi's and my decision to make the trip from Ann Arbor eastward (on Monday) via Canada instead of OH/PA; there was only one bad bit of road construction and only the second border crossing involved much of a wait. (In just over 12 hours including dinner, we made it as far as Troy, NY, where we crashed with friends, then drove back home to Boston on Tuesday morning.)

I thought about the Canada route, but honestly going along the southern edge of Lake Erie wasn't too bad. Of course, the last time I was up this way was when [livejournal.com profile] unkbar hosted me in a house concert, the same weekend as Buffalo's Two Feet Of Snow, which was, shall we say, a much longer trip.

Kind of crazy. @_. We find out in 20 minutes whether our music video made the finalist list. Then, I have a show today! (3pm, Gardens at Juanita Bay, Kirkland). Saturday, travel to a housewarming party followed by a night of readings including! my partner Anna! (I'm playing the same location later, so I'll be checking out their PA at the same time.) Sunday I should take off if I can - I have some tenancy stuff to deal with but nothing that can't be delayed until Monday.

My weekend will be spent at a small local water park here in NH, running around with grown-assed adults dressed up like various Star Wars characters. My job will likely be to keep the kids from trying to pig-pile said adults into the wading pools.

I did have to explain to someone, once, that while it was theoretically possible to drive from San Diego up to Oregon in one day, no one sane would try it because it's about 20 hours of pure driving not counting stops. They were from the east coast and subsequently confused by the idea of driving all day and still being in the same state.

Yeah...we were driving from the Seattle area to Baycon, and got as far as Redding before we felt hypnotized from sleep lack.

Seattle to Santa Clara in one day is possible but not fun.

Whereas I've driven from Central NJ to Tampa Florida in 32 hours (which includes sleep stops and food stops), not to mention being one of those weird guys who understands the concept of a map *grin*, so I can guess just how bad a schlepp that would be.

You want scary fog? Many years back we were heading back to Spokane from Fairchild AFB. It's maybe 20 miles on a decent divided highway.

It was dark, and the fog was so thick that I had to lean out the passenger side window (or sometimes open the door and klook down to be able to see the "fog line" at the right edge of the pavement.

Meanwhile, mom was leaning out the window on the driver's side to try to see the line at the left edge.

Much of the (very slow) driving was done by listening the the wheels crunching on the gravel as the car reached the left or right lane of the two lanes going our direction.

30 feet visibility? Try *three* feet.

I don't know how I'm feeling. I was set to release some code on Monday then the boss looks at it and decides she needs all these changes. Part of the problem was that I don't have the "fine eye for detail" they've developed and apparently little things like the space between the lines matter. Also I seem to have a hard time communicating my ideas. Or she has a problem understanding them. I'd say the problem is about 50/50. I think if I slow down and be a bit more careful about how I phrase things, I'll be OK.

I'm going to spend time with City of Heroes and kick some major ass. I made that demon summoning character I mentioned before. I love it. I stand back while Billo the Clown and Limpo the Dumb do all the work. Soon Gleck the Loon will join them.

My recollection is a bit foggy....

That scary fog - would that by any chance have been where the NY Thruway crosses the Hudson River (heading towards Massachusetts)? From your narrative I think that that would be roughly the right distance - and from long ago I recall a fog there that was just like what you describe.

Ah, yes, Canastota, is a moronic slightly drug infested little town from hell. You totally pegged Grazzi's, though, and if you'd eaten there you would have found the food to be overpriced, overcooked, and the service rude. I'll take a moment to brag about the gem you missed of the Dunkin' Donuts. Our service times are fastest in our franchise and we only have positive reviews from customers on our silly on-line survey (I've only worked here 3 1/2 years or so...) But yes, I've lived here most of my life, and you hit all the high-points in town. The Days Inn is also owned by the same man who owns the IBHoF so it's also incredibly overpriced. Last I checked a single was $112 a night, I think Grazzi's is actually cheaper. And sometimes you get a hot tub in your room if they're overbooked and don't have any other regular rooms to spare, only charging normal price...

And to think I gave up Atlanta for this:P

My weekend... got back at 1:15 AM from a trip to Cherokeye, NC. I was there to attend a wedding. Some comedy of errors, and mother nature tried hard to rain out the park wedding, but it was held and all went well. Next time I do this, I find out what else is in the area and plan to stay an extra day to make it a mini-vacation.
