And, in its own way, one of the scariest. I can absolutely see how ancient peoples would've believed in God, if they'd seen this coming at them across the landscape.

I have to admit, I wouldn't automatically associate that imagery with a loving omnibenevolent deity, but then we're talking about the Old Testament-style God(s) here.

Also, remind me to invest in some asbestos Underoos.

Wow. Another awesome natural phenomenon (along with the luck of having someone actually record it). Thanks for posting. Have reposted to FB, since over there most of my FL isn't on yours :-)

This sort of thing is why firefighters hate crown fires, where the fire leaps along the tops of trees in high winds.
This one is called literally "the Crown Fire", which is just the name of it.
But watch the closeup on the ridge about 1:08 onward.

Y'think THAT'S something? Wait'll the oil-soaked gulf waters get whipped into a hurricane... You'll see some serious shit!

What oil-soaked waters?

The microbes have been eating most of it. (http://articles.sfgate.com/2010-08-25/news/22233622_1_oil-eating-bacteria-oil-rig-corexit)

That is definately old testiment style diety inspired fear. Suddenly the burning bush scene in The 10 Commandments seams a lot more realisitic.

The firestorms at Dresden, Coventry, and the two nuked Japanese cities created fire *hurricanes*, with winds blowing in to the maelstrom at greater than 75 mph.

Horrific stuff if you read the accounts of witnesses.

Saw one of them once back decades ago in CA. I'd forgotten about it since I may have been as old as 6 at the time. There was a large brush fire & it was mid-summer & a wind came up. Then a fire devil arose out of the flames and danced there for a minute before evaporating into itself.

Being as I was just a kid I asked one of the firemen there taking a break what would happen if it jumped the line (without knowing all the lingo) & he said that it would just collect dust & the fire in it would go out. "Nothin' t'worry about, kid."
