LibertyCon So Far
Jul. 10th, 2010 10:58 amIt was a long, nasty haul -- the van doesn't have working AC, and temperatures were in the 90s with high humidity all the way down -- but, with lots of water and strategic rest/cooling down stops and a little bit of rain (not nearly enough), I got here. Had the wrong Super 8 in the GPS. Dummy. :)
Once I finally got settled in, I got over to the Comfort Inn, where a whole bunch of people, including Rev. Bob, Uncle Timmy, Derek, and Dr. Osborn. I think maybe half the con staff and a good dozen attendees not only expressed pleasure but surprise at seeing me. When I said last year that I had a good time and I wanted to come back, they apparently thought I was just saying that to be a good GOH or somethin'. Nope, I had a fantastic time last year, and this year is turning out much the same.
(A couple of really nice moments in the Opening Ceremonies. I got there late and kinda off to the side, and Uncle Timmy was introducing guests, and someone said, "Tom Smith is here", and Uncle Timmy announced me, and I got the most applause I'd heard so far.
(And John Effing Ringo came up to me and said, "Saw you at Dragon*Con. They said there was gonna be a filker [I presume he's talking about the Awards Banquet], and I thought, 'oh noooooo'. You were fucking awesome." Oh yeah, I was in a good mood.)
Saw Toni Weisskopf, always a good thing. Sat next to Mike Z. Williamson at the Mass Autograph session. Mike and I haven't had the chance to talk much lately, so that was nice. I hope to meet Darrell K. Sweet this weekend.
At 9:00, got interviewed. A very strange interview as interviews go, but fun. Lots of singing. It's gonna be podcast, and when I know the details I'll let you know.
At 10:00, my first concert. Hour and a half. (Second one is Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Unofficial one is sometime this afternoon in the lobby/hangout area.) Lots of silly fun, Derek and Brandy and Beth, other folks I know, some newbies. I broke one guy in the front row doing shtick from the Rocky Horror Muppet Show. But dang, I was so tired I blew the words to "Take Your Hands Off The Bear". I'll get that one right Sunday. Realized I'd not hit the Record button on the Zoom. Fortunately, Ira (with his lady Janie) had his Tascam right next to it, so I should be able to get that file today.
And now I'm packing up to go back. I'll be in the lobbyish area, holding court and burning CDs and singing later this afternoon (I promised a set of serious songs).
How's your weekend going so far?
